We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Senior Systems Engineer to join our lively Rail design team in Solihull.

Working with our world class team, this role will cover an extremely wide variety of nationally important projects both in the UK and overseas to help us shape a better world. The post is within the Rail Engineering Midlands Group, which comprises of over 70 dynamic and enthusiastic engineers, designers and railway technicians based in the Midlands Campus in Solihull, West Midlands, which contains many Arup multidisciplinary businesses and has over 600 technical staff.

You will be part of a team responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for major clients including Network Rail, HS2 Ltd, London Underground, contractors (in a design and build context) and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.

As a senior member of the Rail Systems Team, you will provide support and advice to teams across Arup on all rail system and system engineering issues. This can range from leading the requirements management and assurance through detailed system design and system modelling to hazard analysis, EMC and dependability.

The system team are multidisciplinary with individual expertise in particular rail system disciplines (primarily train control, traffic management, rolling stock and railway information systems). The ability to take a multidisciplinary systems perspective is one of skills which will need to be developed in the role.

Role

You will be part of the Rail Team within Arup’s Infrastructure Midlands group, whose main goals are:

1. To train and support designers from other disciplines to successfully apply systems engineering techniques to rail projects; and
2. To provide specialist rail systems leadership and expertise to projects.

To this end, you may expect to:

• set up and transferring skills to manage requirements

• lead the planning and coaching teams to provide assurance evidence

• Support system engineering activities for feasibility, outline and detailed design of systems

• Lead the production of System Engineering plans and processes for
requirements management, systems acceptance, interface management, systems integration, assurance and RAMS

• Assist in the production of design documentation

• Assist in the development of system and software models

• Work under mentorship and supervision of more senior staff

• Support the preparation of bids and tenders


Requirements and skills

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

• Able to explain systems engineering techniques to engineers and managers, covering requirements management, assurance and interface management

• Experience in design on rail projects following Network Rail’s GRIP, London Underground’s PMF or similar life-cycle development model

• Able to write clear reports and plans in plain English

• Familiar with engineering safety management practice according to the Common Safety Method, Yellow Book or equivalent

Desirable skills and knowledge (ideally three or more of the following):

• Able to specify or design train control, traffic management, rolling stock or customer information systems

• Able to design or analyse system architectures using TOGAF or similar methodology

Qualifications:

• A university engineering degree in electrical, electronic or information systems

• Ideally, a masters degree in Railway Systems Engineering
