2017 Intern Technical Solutions Engineer - 12 months

An exciting new internship position has been created to join the Thales UK Ground Transportation team in London, working within a team of highly skilled engineers and systems engineers, involved in some of the most cutting edge and market-leading transportation systems in industry. This internship of up to 12 months, would ideally suit a graduate studying for an engineering related degree (or similar). Someone who can demonstrate an understanding of basic engineering principles as well as an interest in the transportation or rail engineering industries. This position will offer the successful candidate an excellent opportunity to integrate within a team of highly motivated and professional engineers, as well as working and interacting with other project / engineering teams working towards clear and tangible engineering objectives that will add value to the customer and the overall end user.

Primary Purpose of the Role

The technology and systems expertise offered by teams at Thales Ground Transport Systems (GTS) power safe, reliable and efficient services to rail networks the world over. In the UK, we deliver advanced signalling, supervision and control, integrated communications, security and information systems for urban rail in addition to mainline rail and roads. As we continue to grow we need more talented engineers to join the team.

You will be a key member of the Technical Directorate inside GTS UK. The Technical Directorate Intern will support two key missions of the technical directorate:

Ensure that we offer the right technical solutions to our customers
Ensure that we deliver the right technical solutions to our customers.

Specifically, the Technical Directorate Intern will be give four 3-month placements inside the team. Specific activities will be tailored according to the applicant's technical skills and the current bid and product development priorities.

Example Responsibilities and Tasks:

Conduct research for innovation challenges, and review/supplement ideas on innovation portal
Run innovation workshops and lead actions to turn employee ideas into business impact
Support the creation of a flexible knowledge base for storing product and system information
Support the creation of checklists for both safety and technical quality to be used as part of the bid process
Support the development of a systematic technical review programme for existing projects
Support the delivery of the Product Management aspects of the Integrated Business Planning processConduct technical reviews of bids and projects, as required
Support the definition of technical solutions for our bids
Elaborate on UK product requirements, as required.

Principal Relationships:

Day-to-day accountability to the Head of Technology and Innovation
An active contributor to the whole Technical Directorate team

Skills:

Essential
Engineering experience or knowledge, i.e. work placement or internship
Knowledge or understanding of railways and / or transportation
Strong inter-personal skills Desirable
Systems engineering knowledge and/or understanding would be beneficial, but not essential.

Experience:

Essential
Experience in the adoption of new technology;
Experience in the delivery of innovation initiatives aimed at improving operational performance;
Knowledge of safe, high availability, resilient and secure solutions, concepts, engineering principles and processes;
Experience of identification, evaluation and decomposition of customer technical requirements;
Desirable
Experience of winning and delivering business in the transportation sector
Experience of winning and delivering similar technological solutions to non-transportation sectors
