Trainee Planner

We currently have an opportunity for a talented and enthusiastic Project Planner to join our Rail business based at our Solihull site.

As a Project Planner with Arup, You will be part of a team responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for major clients including Network Rail, contractors (in a design and build context) and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.

We are looking to support and develop a Trainee Planner to provide railway infrastructure design planning capability and to be an integral part of our Rail team. The work content includes: Producing design programmes; activity and task planning; scheduling; budget and project planning; spreadsheet work; technical design programme analysis; generation and evaluation of programming options; report writing; interfacing with other disciplines and project administration and QA such as maintaining construction plans, monthly reports and tabulations
Ensuring the successful delivery of design programmes/schedules for multidisciplinary rail projects and all bids across our UK portfolio, you will be responsible for, and typical activities will include:

Initial determination the project design planning requirements from our client brief and in collaboration with the discipline leaders;

Accurately producing and maintaining the required project design plans and controls within multidisciplinary design teams on small to medium sized projects;

Undertaking your own personal development, utilising our in house and external training opportunities, and with the experience of working on live projects.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

·An interested in the design of Railway systems design and Railway Infrastructure Design;
·An interest in the development of design programmes/schedules and in organising activities in an orderly and logical manner
·Competence in planning your own time and able to organise the time of others;
·Experience of software tools (word processor, spreadsheets, Time tabling scheduling, etc.);

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

·Basic knowledge of multidiscplinary railway design project planning processes including concept, feasibility, scheme and detailed design activities and construction task and their sub-task work breakdown structures and order of precedence, would be beneficial;
Knowledge of railway and/or civil engineering design planning process including concept, feasibility and detailed design activities and ‘For Construction’ design deliverables tasks, and their sub-task work breakdown structures and order of precedence would be an advantage;
Experience in the use of planning software tools (Primavera / MS Project), would be beneficial;
Knowledge of resource scheduling, analysis and reporting of critical paths, work output rates (design tasks and construction) would be an advantage.

Qualifications

·Good School leaving qualifications in Maths and Physics;
·An appropriate HND, would be beneficial;
·A university degree or equivalent qualification would be an advantage.
