Civil Engineer - Highways

We have an opportunity for a Civil Engineer, with broad skills in civil engineering to join our established Highways and Civil Engineering group in the Bristol Office. The team is currently growing from 18 people currently to over 20 in the next two years with new opportunities to support projects and growth of the Winchester Office and the developing major Highways capability.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects for commercial and public sector clients, including overseas projects.

You are likely to have experience in general civil engineering design which may include:
• Terrain modelling and earthworks design.
• Flood risk assessment and drainage solutions.
• Intelligent utility modelling solutions and coordination.
• Street and highways design.

A knowledge of structural engineering design that may include retaining walls and underground infrastructure would be an advantage but not essential.

You will play an active role in all stages of our projects, across a number of sectors.
Projects are wide ranging and currently include detailed design and reporting associated with rail electrification work, civil engineering design to support a variety of building projects (eg Exeter bus station, Fleming Park leisure centre), strategic engineering concept and constraint input to help inform early masterplan concepts leading to technical input to support Outline planning permission (Gomm Valley, Severnside)

You will join a close knit team of 18 civil engineers based in Bristol that form part of the 130 strong Infrastructure group in Bristol plus also work collaboratively as part of our wider Infrastructure West team the South West sub-region.

As well as working with the civil engineering team you will be also working with a wide range of other specialists, particularly the Railways, Energy, Geotechnical, Environment, Buildings and Consulting teams who are based with us in our Bristol office. You will also be working with Arup people across the UK and overseas.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Engineer with excellent design, technical, written, verbal and software skills who enjoys working collaboratively in multi-professional design teams, taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results.

You will have demonstrable previous experience in the field of civil Infrastructure and a broad understanding of civil engineering and design.

You will be committed to your own professional development, ideally be working towards an appropriate chartership and looking for challenging work to further develop your engineering skills.

Key responsibilities:

·Carrying out civil engineering design.
·Supervision of others carrying out civil and structure engineering design.
·Analytical, creative and conceptual thinking and evaluation of options and make
·Use of AutoCAD or Microstation CAD packages for design.
·Developing interest in use of various design software packages (GSA, Oasys
packages) spread sheets and GIS, Civils 3D.
·Checking the quality and accuracy of own and others’ work.
·Working with other Arup colleagues, and our collaborators and clients.
·Writing official documents for internal and external use.
·Responsible for defined parts of design projects and individual projects, including the
commercial aspects of these elements / projects.
·Working with Clients and Customers and colleagues to generate mutual agreeable
·Responsible for organising events, activities, processes, and/or small internal
·Developing interest in BIM and conducting design in a 3D environment.
·Developing interests in the wider field of civil engineering projects such as an
·understanding of drainage design, utilities design, and highways design.
·You will have the opportunity to take more responsibility and leadership of the
·projects on which you work, or to increase your technical specialist skills.
·Mentoring the development of younger engineers within the team.
·Represents the team both internally and externally.

·Regular contact with project staff in other disciplines.
·Contact with clients and external collaborators.
