Senior Designer - Overhead Line Equipment

OLE Design Engineer working within a multidisciplinary team delivering a portfolio of exciting and varied rail projects as part of a growing Rail Business in the North West and Yorkshire.
The candidate would be involved in the production of OLE designs for multidisciplinary projects in accordance with all Network Rail company standards, British Standards and best practice, working alongside other designers and technicians.

The OLE/E&P team is part of the North West and Yorkshire Rail team, comprising over 40 lively and enthusiastic engineers, designers and technicians based mainly in the Manchester and York offices, which hold approximately 125 and 10-15 staff, growing to 25-30, respectively. These offices operate across several Arup multidisciplinary businesses and work closely with other large sub regional offices in Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield, and with other relevant Arup railway teams in Birmingham, Glasgow and Bristol. Within the team we have a wealth of experience of railway design, construction, installation and commissioning in the UK and Overseas.


• Produce and check OLE feasibility, scheme and detailed design, working closely with principal designers.
• Manage own time, ensuring the production of deliverables to agreed deadlines and within budget.
• Attend and actively contribute to design team meetings
• Able to work under nominal supervision for the majority of the work
• Able to lead a small OLE team for the production of design packages
• Make sure that satisfactory resolutions of technical queries and project anomalies are achieved.
• Implement the design scope, certifying that the design meets the project requirements.
• Undertake site surveys / site visits
• Assist with risk assessments and analysis using the appropriate tools and methods required.
• Reports to design team leader, project manager, and ultimately the Group leader.
• Working as part of a multidisciplinary team comprising designers, engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance to less experienced members of the design team.


• Proven ability to write accurate, clear, high quality reports in English
• Appropriate Degree, HND or Higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
• Ideally, a chartered member of the IMech E or similar.
• Will have had maintenance, renewal, and/or enhancements experience in a railway infrastructure company, major consultant, or major contractor, with the majority of this being spent on OLE design.
• Significant hands-on CAD production of feasibility, scheme and detailed design of OLE schemes, including switch and crossing (S&C)
• Good underpinning knowledge of OLE design principles, standards, components, and fabrication methods.
• Ideally, experience of OLE construction methods and installation.
• Developing experience of managing and providing technical guidance to technicians / junior engineers
• Responsible for activities within a small team or project.
• Multidisciplinary awareness and ability to liaise with technicians / engineers of other disciplines
• Ability to prioritize and manage workload of self and others.
• Ability of developing client relationships, attending meetings and communication to establish their needs
• Knowledge of relevant standards.
• Accredited Network Rail OLE allocation designer would be beneficial.
• Monitoring costs and budgets would be beneficial
• Practical site experience, including PTS would be beneficial
• Ability to articulate the range of evaluation of design solutions

Familiar with the following:

• Form A/ B, GRIP Stage 3, 4 and 5 work stages
• Software packages including Bentley MicroStation XM / V8.
• OLE Form A and Form B Layout and Cross-section CAD production.
• OLE Allocation
• Site Inspection / reporting
