Civil Engineering Technician (Aviation Focus)

We have an opportunity for a Technician looking for technically challenging work on cutting – edge projects; to join our established Civil and Ground engineering group in the Nottingham Office. We are looking for someone with an interest in aviation and related civil engineering infrastructure who will be able to work with our engineering team in the Midlands and our aviation planning team in London. They will need to already have, or be able to quickly develop, capability in geometric design for airport developments. In addition there will be a need to provide technical support to other civil engineering and infrastructure projects (eg highways, rail, site development and ports and harbours).

Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic Technician with excellent design, technical, and software skills who enjoys working collaboratively in multi-professional design teams, taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results.

You will have demonstrable previous experience in the field of civil Infrastructure and aviation and a broad understanding of civil engineering and design.

You will be committed to your own professional development, ideally be working towards an appropriate chartership and looking for challenging work to further develop your engineering skills.

Requirements and skills
Key responsibilities:

·You will be responsible for the production of engineering drawings and models, working under minimal supervision.
This will involve producing drawings and models on the basis of sketch information from engineers, using your experience and knowledge of infrastructure civils to turn the sketches into coordinated models and high quality drawings.
·You will manage your own time to work to agreed deadlines, and will be required to organize information and documentation effectively, which will include managing CAD and BIM files for projects you are working on.
·You will be responsible for training and developing new apprentices.
·You will be an inquisitive and creative, solution-orientated yet collaborative individual, who gives their all to ensure the client is happy and the solution both high-quality and practical.
·You will be accountable to individual project managers for day-to-day delivery. You will also be responsible for reviewing work done by others. You will liaise with other disciplines within the regional office and elsewhere within Arup. You may be required to work away from your normal office from time to time.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

·Ability to communicate technical issues to co-professionals
·Proven success of working in a team environment.
·Design Technician with proven post-qualification (HNC/HND) experience.
·Confident with good communication skills in written and spoken English
·Able to take responsibility for own work (designs, 3D models, drawings, calculations, reports, etc) and that of junior/apprentice technicians. Would be required to self-check own work and check work of others to satisfy QA requirements.
·Able to take responsibility for issuing work (design packages, 3D models, drawing production, basic calculations, etc).
·Knowledge and experience of applying highway design codes (eg DMRB).
·Ability in AutoCAD, MicroStation and Microsoft Office
·Ability in, and demonstrable experience of, the application of 3D design software packages (e.g. InRoads, Civil 3D) – aviation and major highway experience is essential.
·Design experience in general technical aspects of highway and aviation design would be expected – e.g. surface water drainage, signs and markings, pavement design.
·Ability to balance own workload against project requirements.
·Ability to communicate technical issues to co-professionals
·Proven success of working in a team environment.
·Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
·Ability to work on multiple projects.

Qualifications:

HNC/HND or equivalent

Desirable skills and knowledge:

·Knowledge and experience of applying relevant aviation design codes (eg CAP 168, ICAO Annex 14).
