Senior Design Engineer - Civils

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Rail Civil Senior / Principal Engineer to join our Rail team in Manchester and help us shape a better world.

You will have experience acting as a Civil Engineering Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) within the rail environment. You should have experience of working within and leading rail civil engineering teams within multi-disciplinary projects including re-signalling, depots, sidings, signalling and other rail projects.

Working with our world class team of dynamic engineers and designers, this role will cover an extremely wide variety of nationally important projects both in the UK and overseas.

Our Manchester office contains over 260 talented multidisciplinary designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services and expertise including railway design, construction, installation and commissioning.

You will be part of a team responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for major clients including Network Rail, contractors (in a design and build context) and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.

We are looking for a passionate, commercially aware Railway Civil Engineer with experience acting as a Civil Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE). You will have excellent technical knowledge to be an integral part of our rail civil engineering team.

Ensuring the successful delivery of technically excellent multidisciplinary rail projects and bids across our UK portfolio, you will be responsible for, and typical activities will include:

• Determining the civils design requirements from our client brief making sound decisions to produce the right design solution;

• Leading the required civils design for multidisciplinary design teams on large or medium sized projects;

• Checking the civils designs and calculations;

• Sharing knowledge, best practice and innovation across our business, providing guidance, training and feedback with other related disciplines and skills, locally and across the UK;

• Leading the production of designs that are right first time and support our creation of a culture of quality;

• Leading the identification and elimination or mitigation of risks during the design process and the production of deliverables that support the Safe By Design process. Producing focussed and high quality designer risk assessments;

• Managing project civils resources and identifying shortfalls and issues in a timely manner such that programme timescales are not compromised;

• Mentoring junior engineers;

• Managing your own personal development utilising our in house and external training opportunities, with the freedom to work independently.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

• Experience in leading and checking civil engineering production of feasibility, scheme and detailed design reports, layouts, schematics and calculations within multidisciplinary rail projects;

• Competent in the production, checking and approval of designs for ancillary and lineside civil engineering, including foundations, structures and supports for signaling infrastructure, equipment buildings / cubicles / staging, compounds, cable routes, under track crossings and station platforms;

• Acted in the role of client facing Rail Civil Contractor Responsible Engineer (CRE);

• Awareness and usage of ProjectWise;

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

• Design of level crossing ground plans;

• Competent in the production of drawings using CAD (e.g. Bentley MicroStation) software;

• Experience of managing teams;

• Commercial awareness, managing change;

• Experience in undertaking site surveys / site visits and reporting on asset condition


• An appropriate Civil Engineering degree or equivalent qualification

• Ideally, a member of the ICE or similar working towards chartership would be an advantage
