Associate Director - Highways

Job Summary

Our Birmingham based Strategic Highways team currently has a vacancy for an Associate Director to support our growing team. The successful candidate will take responsibility in all aspects of highway design to work on local, national and international schemes.

The appointed candidate will join AECOM’s established highways business which continues to expand following several major project wins. We would like to hear from individuals who have team management and highways design experience with a sound technical background and business development capabilities that share our enthusiasm and determination to develop our business.

About the office:

AECOM’s Birmingham office is centrally located in Birmingham close to city centre shops and within 8 mins walk from Snow Hill Station and 15 mins walk from New Street Station. The office occupies the 3 rd floor of a modern building which houses an in house café and gym with shower facilities. There is unground parking for those wishing to cycle to work but there is only limited car parking available to senior management. Then office delivers work to a number of clients including Highways England, Birmingham City Council, Local Authorities, Transport for London (LoHAC) and HS2 Ltd.

About our projects:

AECOM has been successful in securing the Midlands Region Package for the delivery of PCF Stages 3 and 4 to Highways England in Birmingham. This Package includes A500 Etruria Widening, near Stoke, A46 Coventry Junctions and M42 J6 Improvement. These new schemes secured through competitive tender under CDF, complement our existing Midlands schemes of M54 to M6 Toll Link Road, A38 Derby Junctions and A52 Nottingham Junctions. AECOM has existing Strategic Highways offices in a number of locations and the Midlands work is currently being managed our of our Chesterfield and Bedford offices. The new Birmingham team will provide valuable support to these offices in delivering the Midlands programme of schemes to Highways England.

AECOM has also been successful in winning the HS2 Phase 2b design through competitive tender to HS2 Ltd. Phase 2b takes the route NE from Birmingham up towards Sheffield. AECOM, Capita and INECO are working as a joint venture to support HS2 in their strategic objective of developing a hybrid Bill by 2019 and provide ongoing resource and/or services to support the obtaining of Royal Assent in 2022 and handover to the next stage of delivery of the Route, post Royal Assent. We have established a team in our Birmingham office, close to the HS2 offices to undertake this work which involves carrying our sufficient design to define the footprint of the project (known as the Red Line). This includes the main railway alignment design as well as all the necessary side road diversions and structural requirements. One major element will be the need to divert the M1 motorway near Nottingham to accommodate the new HS2 route.

Job responsibilities include:

• Provide technical leadership for the highways team.

• Fulfil the role of technical lead and/or project manager.

• Effectively and efficiently undertake project and team activities, including commercial, managerial and technical aspects.

• Contribute to the development and improvement of technical standards and provide feedback for continuous improvement.

• Generate and maintain good client relations.

• Resolve client and project issues

• Review the project against company processes and client requirements.

• Where appropriate, monitor the performance of the team, to ensure that the project outputs are subject to appropriate scrutiny and verification

• Establish strong working relationships with other internal teams within AECOM

• Take an active role in work winning, supporting business development activities including the development of client relationships

• Leads technical business development work

• Approves and signs off on work

• Provides estimates for the engineering budget and schedule and oversees technical resources to meet requirements on large, complex projects

Minimum Requirements

To be successful in this role we would like to hear from candidates who meet the following criteria;

• Proven experience of managing teams and undertaking a range of highway engineering related projects.

• Excellent technical and communication skills

• Extensive working knowledge of the design manual for roads and bridges

• Previous experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment operating across a matrix of projects
