Senior Transport Planner (Rail)

London, United Kingdom

Arup is a firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world. As a wholly independent organisation, we are owned in trust for the benefit of our employees and their dependants; with no shareholders or external investors we determine our own business priorities and direction.

We have an opportunity for a senior transport planner who is passionate about creating excellent places and effective transport networks to join our successful transport consulting team in London. Our practice is involved in development, strategy and infrastructure projects for public and private sector clients. These include high profile projects such as HS2, airport expansion and strategic city residential, commercial and regeneration schemes in London and the southeast.

You will help in developing our Rail Planning business within Arup’s Transport Consulting business which is growing and requires an additional experienced project manager with a background in railway planning. The Passenger Rail Planning business is mainly focussed in the UK, although an increasing portfolio of International work is being secured through a focussed business development strategy.

Our projects require a broad range of skills and the ability to deliver quality work within a fast-moving and deadline-driven environment. You should enjoy taking task responsibility as part of larger project teams and be keen to broaden their technical skills to support growth within the practice and their own career development.

You will be responsible for project managing small and medium sized rail planning projects for a mix of public and private sector clients, as well as leading delivery of significant work packages within larger projects. Projects could range from demand forecasting, business case appraisal through to development of railway strategies and plans, and the delivery of specialist advice in areas such as performance forecasting and planning, operational capacity analysis and contractual / regulatory issues.

You will also be expected to support business development activities, including client relationship development and management, securing commissions and opportunity identification.

You will be working as part of one or more project teams led by a project director or manager, and we will expect you to manage projects. You will also need to be able to work with wider multi-disciplinary design and planning teams. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential as you will be involved in preparing reports and advice notes and attending meetings. You may also be involved in the preparation of commercial bids.

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about transport, its wider role and the contribution it can make to shaping the future. Good interpersonal skills are important and you must be able to work collaboratively and flexibly with colleagues who have a range of backgrounds and experience. You will also be willing to learn new skills and committed to developing your own career and supporting junior colleagues in their own development.
