Senior Environmental Consultant - EIA

Our national impact assessment team guide clients on the environmental, socio-economic, health and equality component of infrastructure and development projects, providing comprehensive strategies and assessments to help obtain development consent for complex, high-profile projects. Recent projects include High Speed Two Phase 1, Phase 2a and Phase 2b, Thames Tideway Tunnel and the Garden Bridge in central London.

As a senior member of an established team, you will be responsible for environmental consultancy, together with business and team development activities. Your core professional expertise will be in EIA management, ideally with additional related skills. The role will require travel to our offices throughout Yorkshire and elsewhere in UK.

You will have the potential to progress towards a higher leadership role. You will be encouraged to undertake training, coaching and other self-development activities.

You will report to the NWY Environment Team Leader and will require close liaison with our UK Environment Leader in London and other Sector Leaders in the UK and abroad.

You will be required to work directly with senior leadership, directors, project and business leaders, business development officers, marketers and contract staff and must be comfortable working with people at all levels.


Role

This position is for a Senior Environmental Consultant to work within our Environmental Consulting business. We have opportunities throughout our UK business including London, Solihull, Leeds and Manchester to support our impact assessment team on a range of infrastructure development projects including in the rail, road and aviation sectors. The role will involve working in a multi-disciplinary environment alongside other environmental, planning engineering and design specialists to ensure that appropriate environmental and sustainability measures are considered and incorporated into the design and implementation of projects as appropriate.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Programme/project management of environmental appraisals and impact assessments, and related technical studies and ensure project deliverables to agreed programme and standards;

• Co-ordination of production, writing and/or technical review of environmental reports, e.g. scoping reports or Environmental Statements;

• To successfully financially manage environmental projects within budget;

• Client liaison and stakeholder engagement with project teams, legal advisors and external parties, such as statutory consultees;

• To coordinate and manage sub-consultants and junior environmental consultancy staff;

• To prepare impact assessment business development proposals and assist with the preparation of marketing material and event organisation;

• Ensure adherence to Arup’s health and safety and quality management standards.

Requirements and skills


Essential skills and knowledge:

• Existing consultancy experience with first-hand experience of managing/co-ordinating environmental appraisals and environmental impact assessments, and the preparation of environmental statements;

• Good knowledge of UK and European legislation;

• A focus on meeting and exceeding client requirements and a commitment to excellence;

• Experience of financial management of environmental projects;

• Good analytical skills with a strong focus on finding solutions in relation to EIA technical and project management issues;

• Excellent communication and report writing skills.

Qualifications:

• A good honours degree in a relevant subject such as Environmental Science;

• Membership of a relevant professional institute (e.g. Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) or the Institution of Environmental Science (IES) – full membership or working towards full membership.
