Associate Resource and Waste Management Consultant

From offices around the world, the team advises at each stage of a project cycle or business development. Arup's specialists offer a multi-disciplinary service aimed at developing policy, assessing impact, innovative design and implementation, gaining regulatory approvals, reporting publicly, managing risk and controlling costs.

You would be joining Arup’s Resource and Waste team in London to further grow the team, and be part of a progressive, enthusiastic and creative team working on multi-disciplinary and high profile projects of national importance in the UK, Middle East, Africa, Europe and Globally.


Mainly working on high profile development and major infrastructure projects for private and public sector clients at the planning and design stage. You would be a leading member of the resources and waste team, responsible for the preparation, co-ordination and management of waste policy and strategy, feasibility studies, technical due diligence, waste impact assessment and procurement of waste infrastructure.

A key part of this role will be to demonstrate leadership abilities, allied with flexibility and initiative to pursue and respond to new business opportunities within and beyond the resources and waste field.

It is essential that you have excellent knowledge of and contacts in the waste sector in the UK as well as a clear view of the market, and a proven track record of growing a consultancy business in this sector.

You would be managing multiple projects and be responsible for technical quality, financial control and reporting. This would include an ability to interface with multi-disciplinary project teams, communicating and liaising with clients, and taking the lead in business development activities including proposal preparation.

You would be managing the Resources and Waste team in London including responsibility for the professional development of less experienced members of the team.

This is a new opportunity for a hard-working and flexible individual, who is a team player, possesses good attention to detail, is reliable, proactive and shows initiative.

Being able to travel across the UK and work away from home, with potential periods of international travel on assignments, when required. You will report to the waste business leader in London.


Essential Skills and Knowledge:

• In-depth technical and financial knowledge and experience of waste storage, collection, transport and treatment technologies.
• Highly experienced in developing resource and waste management strategies for local authorities and / or new development projects.
• Proven ability as lenders’ technical advisor for waste infrastructure projects having successfully undertaken waste technical and commercial due diligence and feasibility studies for International Financial Institutions.
• Good waste planning, environmental permitting and waste procurement experience (PFI/PPP etc) providing technical support to private and public sector clients.
• A strong focus of meeting and exceeding client requirements and a commitment to excellence is critical.
• Highly developed client management skills.
• Demonstrable ability and track record in business development with internal and external clients.
• Excellent analytical skills will be required, in relation to waste technical and project management issues.
• Excellent project management skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively at all levels and across disciplines.
• Self-motivated and able to work both independently as well as within a larger multi-disciplinary team.
• Highly developed team leadership skills and able to demonstrate these have been successfully applied.
• Excellent presentation and report writing skills.
• Expert knowledge of UK and EU resource and waste policy and legislation.
