Senior Transport Planner - Strategic Modeller

We have a range of projects and opportunities with key clients including transport for London, HS2 Ltd, Highways Agency, DfT and private developers in London and overseas. We are seeking an enthusiastic senior transport modeller to strengthen our central London team.

Our projects require a broad range of skills and the ability to deliver quality work within a fast-moving and deadline-driven environment. Candidates should enjoy taking task responsibility as part of larger project teams and be keen to broaden their technical skills to support growth within the practice and their own career development.


You will be part of an established modelling team based in London. The role will involve working on a range of transport planning / modelling high profile projects in the UK and overseas.

As part of your role you will be exposed and interact with multidisciplinary teams and the vibrant transport modelling community in Arup globally. As a senior strategic transport modeller, you will provide project task leadership and training of transport modellers and planners in the transport planning team in London. You will act as task leader for modelling elements of major projects or project manager for small/medium sized projects. As part of the team you will also be responsible for business improvement and development initiatives with your line manager.

This will involve:
Undertake transport modelling including, base model development, calibration / validation and forecasting elements;
Conducting economic appraisals and assisting in preparing business cases;
Attend meetings with clients and collaborators;
Producing technical reports.
Our modelling teams have so far delivered some of the most high profile projects in the UK and overseas. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual with good communication skills with an ambition to work on exciting and high profile jobs.

Requirements and skills

University degree/HNC in a relevant discipline (e.g. civil engineering, geography, economics, mathematics).
Typically around 6 years of experience in transport planning and modelling with an emphasis on highways and multimodal modelling.
Proven experience in at least one of the following modelling suites SATURN, EMME, CUBE, VISUM as well as GIS.
Experience in using TfL’s Railplan and DfT’s PLANET models.
Proven ability to build, calibrate and validate traffic models with minimum supervision and use of TAG including experience in implementing demand models.
Proven ability to act as task leader on modelling projects or PM on small to medium size jobs.
Highly proficient in Excel.
Good experience in report and proposal writing.
Excellent communication skills and interface with clients.
Ability to work with limited supervision and train junior staff.

A Masters degree in relevant discipline (e.g. transport planning).
VBA knowledge.
Experienced in building bespoke traffic models in excel.
Membership of an appropriate professional institute; for example ICE, CILT or CIHT.
Working towards or acquired Transport Planning Professional or other relevant qualification
