Our office in Cardiff is seeking a Building Physicist / Energy Modeller to work as part of the Buildings West region. The Cardiff team work on a diverse range of projects including Higher Education, Healthcare, Science & Industry, Commercial and Aviation within Wales, wider UK and Internationally.


We have an opportunity for a Building Physics/Energy Modeller who is looking for technically challenging work on cutting-edge projects, to join our creative and friendly Building Engineering Team in Cardiff.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Currently, the Building Engineering Teams in Cardiff are involved with over 30 projects world-wide from concept design through to practical completion covering commercial, healthcare, education, science and industry, data centres and many other specialist building types, and working alongside the world’s leading architects.

High-profile projects that Building Engineering Cardiff have been instrumental in working on include the following:

• The UK’s first large scale High Energy Proton Beam Therapy Cancer Centre, Manchester
• BBC Wales Broadcasting House, Cardiff
• Datacentres for a number of high profile clients

Key responsibilities:

• Whole Building Energy analysis
• Analysis of passive building system solutions
• Regulatory compliance assessments
• Energy Performance Certification
• Evaluation of airflow, thermal comfort and air quality
• Data visualisation and analytics
• Report writing
• Development of digitalisation initiatives (potentially coding)
• Development of a building optimisation skills
• Supporting the development of appropriate building energy strategies and sustainability strategies for buildings.
• Working closely with the architect and other team members in the development of the building form to align with passive design principles, the objectives of the energy and sustainability strategies and the needs of the building services
• Managing the production of compliance reports
• Liaising with the client and other external team members
• Providing technical guidance and training to mechanical engineers
• Participate in the Arup Mechanical Skills & Building Physics Network
• Quality Assurance / checking others work
• Develop and streamline existing software procedures

Requirements and skills:

We are looking for an enthusiastic Building Physicist / Energy Modeller with excellent modelling, design, technical, and software skills who enjoys working collaboratively in multi- professional design teams, taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results.

You will be committed to your own professional development and looking for challenging work to develop your engineering skill.


• Degree qualified in Mechanical, Architectural or HVAC Engineering, ideally to Masters level
• Looking to achieve Chartered Engineer status via an appropriate professional institution.
• An understanding of building HVAC, envelope, lighting and other related systems.
• Experience with building energy modelling software such as IES.
• Understanding of sustainable building design and in satisfying the regulatory and voluntary codes associated with sustainability and energy strategy
• Knowledge of BREEAM, in particular the Energy and compliance credits associated with Energy
• A good awareness of building design beyond own discipline
• Demonstrable enthusiasm in driving a Digital agenda including automation via software such as Revit to deliver organisational value, as well as utilising visualisation tools to communicate engineering concepts.
• Ability to work with the highest calibre of both UK based and international Architects and understand architectural intent.
• An ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines is essential
• Good planning and organisation skills
• Excellent communications skills, written and verbal
• Highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges
