Maintenance Technician (Plumbing)

The Department of Estates and Facilities Management (EFM) at the University of Sheffield is responsible for the management of the University's estate including the maintenance and refurbishment of property and facilities.

We are seeking to appoint a Maintenance Technician (Plumber) to assist in the delivery of the University mechanical building maintenance service, including pre-programmed inspections and remedial works.

You will possess a minimum of City and Guilds Advanced Diploma level 3 in Plumbing Services (6161-25) or equivalent; in addition, Gas Safe Registration for domestic properties is required. An approved apprenticeship is desirable.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
 Carry out planned and reactive plumbing maintenance across the campus through the testing, fault finding and repair on a range of services installations, associated plant, appliances and systems. Complete jobs safely, ensuring procedures are followed correctly.
 Work individually carrying out either inspections or minor repairs. The works would be carried out whilst the buildings are occupied.
 Many of the services and distribution networks are contained in ducts, risers and other voids all of which may have access restrictions. The site guidance on safe working and access must be followed at all times.
 At all times work in compliance with the University’s policies, procedures, current technical legislation and health and safety standards.
 As directed by the appropriate supervisor, prioritise jobs in order of urgency. This involves drawing upon depth of knowledge, skills, experience and expertise to deal with the job in hand. Make decisions on the methods to be used and the sequence of actions.
 Undertake mechanical maintenance of plumbing services using a range of tools and techniques: this includes central heating systems, mains cold water, gas services, domestic hot water, low pressure cold water, etc. The work is split between planned and reactive maintenance.
 As directed by the appropriate supervisor, liaise with contractors who are working on University premises to ensure they are carrying out work in accordance with required timescales and University health and safety standards. Provide advice about how to approach technical tasks, using site knowledge.
 Liaise with and maintain good relationships with key contacts in University departments to let them know about work being undertaken and keep them up to date with progress.
 Responsible for reporting stock levels of consumables to enable planned and reactive maintenance to be achieved.
 Maintain personal tools, equipment and vehicles, taking responsibility for the safe keeping of these.
 Respond to requests for assistance at the University outside normal working hours in accordance with the departments’ call-out procedures. The post may be required to participate in a formal on-call rota to provide emergency responses across the University Estate. Participation in this rota will be determined by the University in accordance with the on-call provisions.
