Research Associate in the process mapping and powder flow characterisation in roller compactor

University of Sheffield

Sheffield, United Kingdom

Chemical and Biological Engineering is a thriving department within the University’s Faculty of Engineering, comprising 34 academic staff, 41 research staff and technicians, 11 support staff and over 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The Department has a vibrant research and teaching culture spanning particle science and technology / nanotechnology, new energy technologies, the environment and applications of post-genomics bioscience for biotechnology and bioprocessing applications.

The post holder will work on a project seeking to map the roller compaction process. The equipment, Roller Compactor, is based at Particle Products Group (PPG), The University of Sheffield, UK. The successful applicant will determine the factors that influence the granule attributes and finished product quality and finally map the process based on the results. The Research Associate will also characterise the flow of the powders in the roller compactor using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and monitor the ribbons uniformity from roller compactor in real time using Thermal Camera and link it with the PIV data. The process map and flow characteristics are expected to link together to the build the mechanistic understanding of granulation process in roller compactor.

The successful applicant will also be involved in the writing of technical papers for submission and then disseminate finding and national and international conferences and in turn engage with professional societies and scientific bodies.
It is essential that the post holder have a PhD in particle technology, or equivalent experience along with practical experience of particle technology, roller compaction, PIV techniques and particle powder particle interactions. You must also have the ability to interact effectively with a variety of scientists and conduct strong working relationships whilst being able to communicate effectively, both oral and written, in order to participate fully in project meetings and at conferences.
