Florey Advanced Clinical Fellow (Microbiology)

The University of Sheffield working in partnership with the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has developed a Florey Advanced Fellowship in Infectious Diseases. We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual who has the ambition to be amongst the next generation of world-leading academic clinicians.

Applications are now invited for a fixed-term Florey Advanced Fellowship in Medical Microbiology to commence as soon as possible for three years. The Fellowship is a 80:20 academic:clinical post for post-CCT physicians accredited in Microbiology or dual accredited in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Successful candidates will be expected to have high impact publications in the field and a well-developed research plan to include the submission of external applications within the first year.

Full GMC registration is required, together with Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) or equivalent. Applicants should hold a CCT in Microbiology/Virology in combination with either general Internal medicine. The post holder(s) will be expected to fulfil clinical commitments within the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust including contributing to the on-call rota at Consultant level and contributing to general or specialist ID clinics as best suits their academic programme. They and will also have an academic base in the Florey Institute and the University Department of Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease and their research will be expected to align with the Florey Institute’s strategic direction.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
You will make a full and active contribution to the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’. These include the achievement of excellence in applied teaching and research, and scholarly pursuits to make a genuine difference in the subject area and to the University’s achievements as a whole.

Job Plan
This post will comprise 10 programmed activities, of which 2 will be NHS PAs and 8 will be funded from academic sources. Clinical PAs will include 1.5 DCC and 0.5 SPA. The precise weekly timetable will be subject to negotiation with the Clinical Lead. The precise sub-specialty area for clinics can be negotiated with Dr Helena Parsons, Clinical Lead for Medical Microbiology, and ideally will be
based on your interests and skills. The 0.5 SPA and study leave entitlement will provide you with time for continual professional development (CPD), for appraisal and revalidation, and for teaching and mentoring junior medical doctors in training grades.

 Work with colleagues, both within the department and across the wider University, to develop a long-term strategy for basic and translational research in Infection, under the umbrella of the Florey Institute.
 Conduct innovative and high quality research and scholarship that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour and is aligned to the strategic direction of the University and the Florey Institute.
 Disseminate research findings through conference presentations and publications in recognised high-quality/peer-reviewed journals. Ensure research activities align with REF, outputs, impact and environment.

You will be required to undertake light administrative work in support of the needs of the Department of Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease and The University of Sheffield. Administrative duties will be determined with the Head of Department but should not detract from your research needs.

Library Facilities
The University Clinical Library is housed on ‘C’ Floor of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The Medical Library is in the main University Library which is within half a mile of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and offers excellent lending reference and national lending (Boston Spa) facilities.
