The Department of Chemistry is one of the leading departments in the UK, with 38 academic staff (including 14 full Professors), around 20 post-doctoral scientists, more than 500 undergraduate students, approximately 100 postgraduate students, 21 technicians and 9 clerical support staff. Research activity is organised into four ‘clusters’, comprising Synthetic Chemistry; Chemical Biology; Polymers, Materials, & Surface Chemistry; and Spectroscopy & Theoretical Chemistry.

Applications are invited for two 12-month post-doctoral research associates in Synthetic Polymer Chemistry. The successful applicants will conduct world-class research in polymer science under the supervision of Professor Steve Armes FRS.

These two positions will each involve the preparation of a wide range of methacrylic diblock copolymer nano-objects via RAFT dispersion polymerisation, their molecular characterisation by NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography and studies of their self-assembly behaviour in aqueous solution using dynamic light scattering, TEM, SAXS and aqueous electrophoresis.

The successful applicants will be highly motivated, independent research scientists and strong team players. You may be required to assist with the supervision of PhD students and the ability to write high-quality first-draft scientific papers and give excellent oral presentations at international conferences is essential.

You should have a good honours degree in Chemistry (or equivalent experience) and a high-quality PhD in Polymer Chemistry, or a closely related discipline.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
 Conduct world-class research in the area of synthetic polymer chemistry
 Write up research data for publication in scientific journals
 Communicate these findings at international conferences
 Assist with the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students
 Order chemicals and laboratory equipment after completing an appropriate health and safety assessment.
 Participate in weekly group meetings and seminars
 Maintain a sound working knowledge of the relevant literature
 Organise regular laboratory checks and maintenance when appropriate
 Acquire hands-on experience of appropriate analytical techniques where necessary
 Participation in scientific collaborations with other research groups
 Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of develpoments.
 If given a particular hypothesis to examine, plan for own contribution up to 3 months ahead, incorporating issues such as the availability of resources, deadlines, project milestones and overall research aims.
 Continuously monitor and check data and results. The unpredictability of research means that daily planning needs to accommodate new developments.
 Carry out administrative duties, as required
 Any other duties that are commensurate with the grade of the post
