Technical Director


Abu Dhabi, UAE

The Project Director will have overall responsibility and accountability for delivering AECOM services to the client in support of the design and delivery of the contract. The Project Director will be responsible for providing leadership and direction to the AECOM team in providing quality, responsive technical services and project management services to the client to enable its achievement of the complex program goals and objectives. The scope and scale of the program demands a team of highly committed and dedicated professionals who share the passion of the client in delivering its program. The Project Director will provide executive direction for the execution of all agreed services in a professional, legal, ethical, timely and safe manner at an appropriate and consistent level of quality.

Job Duties

Responsible for the corporate, commercial and technical performance of the project, including:

Compliance with the contractual obligations to the client.

Reviewing and approving the project management plan and other management plans necessary for successful project delivery.

Provision of services and products to required quality, safety, environmental and sustainability standards.

Provision of services and products within a risk profile acceptable to AECOM.

Resolving client and program issues above the Project Manager level and handling all liability issues.

Reviewing the project against AECOM processes and client requirements.

Ensuring remarks/comments for the project report have been resolved.

Approving monthly progress and financial (e-PM) reports.

Ensuring forecast revenue budget and forecast cost budget (EACs) are robust (in e-PM).

Ensure invoicing and debt collections are managed within the terms defined on the contract.

Lead in the recruitment and selection of the leadership team.

Monitoring of all direct reports performance, especially to ensure that the project outputs are subject to appropriate scrutiny and verification.

Public relations for the project.

Utilisation/optimisation of resources.

Work together as an integrated leadership team with the client to ensure successful delivery of the project.

Responsible for and provide management and guidance on all design activities for project delivery.

Define and report on schedule and budget at pre-determined approval points

Proactively identify and mitigate scope creep, program and performance issues.

Ensures effective change control is implemented and variations are documented and client approvals obtained.

Initiate resolution of designer, contractor, internal and consultant issues including proposed solutions, options, recommendations & path forward.

Maintain, build and make needed adjustments to the AECOM project delivery team.

Chair regular review sessions with the team and provide constructive guidance for future performance expectations to continuously improve the project delivery program.

Initiates and maintains communication with key client staff, in compliance with approved communications plan and the broader AECOM organization.

Utilize leadership and negotiation skills to resolve critical issues.

Ensure that QA/QC procedures are being implemented and followed at all phases of the program in accordance with quality assurance program procedures

Puts a high priority on safety, develops a strong safety ethic within project team, and drives safe practices, behaviours and results

Minimum Requirements

Specific Skills Required

Proven experience in leading the delivery on a major real estate or major infrastructure projects (ports, airports, mixed use developments, roads, drainage and an industrial complex).

Must have delivered at least one major project throughout the full lifecycle with successful results.

Person Specification (Behavioral Attributes)

Client-focused and able to build strong relationships with all key high level external stakeholders.

Strong leadership and management skills and able to organize and manage a complex project team.

Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

20+ years’ experience with minimum 7 plus years’ experience in a similar capacity

Regional GCC experience is required

Has previously been the no.1 person on a major project

Highly experienced technical specialist within the aviation / public infrastructure sector

Tier 1 international experience and expertise in program delivery

An industry recognised leader with ability to influence at the highest level.

Preferred Qualifications


BSc. or BEng. Majoring in a relevant subject

Chartered status of a relevant professional body is desirable, but not essential.
