Senior Transport Planner

We are seeking an enthusiastic Senior Transport Planner to join a busy and growing Planning team in our Liverpool office.

You will be responsible for supporting the delivery of transport planning projects and be involved in preparing scheme preparation and business case development for transport schemes. There will also be a need to prepare Transport Assessments and Travel Plans for a diverse portfolio of projects, including major building and infrastructure works, opportunities to lead on business development, client care activities and provide strategic thinking in order to help shape local and regional transport policy. Working more widely with other Arup offices there are opportunities to travel and contribute to other projects of national importance.

This role will suit an enthusiastic and dynamic individual with good communication skills with an ambition to win work on exciting and high profile schemes. The long term plan would be to grow a Transport Planning team under the Senior Transport Planner in the Liverpool office.


Identify, develop and appraise options for transport schemes
Undertake transport modelling using a range of proprietary software
Produce Transport Assessments for medium to large development projects
Develop outline engineering designs
Be responsible for the production of deliverables including reports and drawings
Support the team in the preparation of tender submissions and proposals
Attend meetings with our clients and collaborators
Support the management and administration of our projects
Communicate effectively and articulate engineering and design concepts to a non technical audience
Work flexibly with the Planning team in the north-west, going beyond the ‘typical’ confines of your discipline to deliver creative and integrated solutions.
Form part of Arup’s wider Transport Planning team across the North West and Yorkshire, with some time spent working outside of Liverpool with colleagues across our Northern offices (Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, York and Cumbria).

Requirements and Skills

Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering, Transport Planning or other relevant discipline
Typically over 8 years’ postgraduate experience in Transport Planning
Chartered Membership of a relevant professional institution
Demonstrable experience in transport appraisal and modelling, including development planning
Wider knowledge of transport strategy and policy, business case development (including
WebTAG) and environmental considerations
Strong analytical skills with the ability to use various software packages, including Linsig,
Junctions8, Aimsun, Paramics and Vissim
Ability to oversee production of outline highway designs using DMRB / MCHW, along with the
Road Safety Audit process
Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing, including the production of
both technical and non-technical reports
Strong project manager – lead significant transport projects
Wider knowledge of national and local planning policy and its implementation
Business Development experience

Master Degree in Civil Engineering, Transport Planning or other relevant discipline
Ability to use software packages including SATURN, CUBE and EMME/3 and VISSUM
BIM awareness and skills
Experience of leading a team
