Regional Head of Engineering

AECOM are looking to recruit and retain an experience Permanent way engineering manager to direct, manage and control operational, commercial, administrative and professional Permanent Way functions within the office discipline so as to meet agreed business targets

Provide expert advice and assistance to the section

Fulfil the duties of Engineering/Design Manager on projects as required

Perform studies, prepare reports and similar work

Develop feasibility, concept, outline and detailed designs and specification of projects

Check and/or approve designs prepared by others

Develop budgets and control expenditure to budget

Develop new business opportunities

Maintain and develop Client relations

Application of Skills & Knowledge

Delegate responsibility effectively

Display creativity and problem solving ability in approach to management, assignments, projects and tasks

Show capacity to improve effectiveness

Ability to develop other staff

Mentoring skills – appropriate to Institution

Ability to manage and work effectively as part of a team

Develop quantifiable value propositions for Aecom and clients

Have a general awareness of management tools, techniques and their application

Lead efforts in order to determine best practices

Scope & Impact

Allocate and direct staff resources to optimum benefit

Recruit staff after identifying need

Manage staff performance, identify and act on under performing staff

Identify staff training needs and arrange appropriate training

Mentor/advise/assist all staff

Verify and approve all time-sheets

Ensure quality standards and procedures are attained/improved

Participate in the management of the company as required by the Executive Board

Have influence within the team and discipline peer group across AECOM

Identify opportunities to leverage AECOM Expertise in the marketplace


Seek and accept appropriate levels of responsibility and accountability

Demonstrate a commitment to CPD

Participate constructively in the professional, business and social environment

Exercise leadership and interpersonal skills in the management and motivation of others

Interface up to senior management level and possibly Board level

Willing to establish a leadership and coaching relationship peers

Lead a small team of people

Technical & Professional

Develops body of knowledge and skills relevant to work and role requirements

Actively seeks self development opportunities and contributes to the wider body of knowledge in Aecom

Applies body of knowledge and skills to role

Ensures contribution is in line with business direction and professional excellence

Commercial & Business

Understands the importance of clients to Aecoms’s business

Acts to satisfy client and business expectations

Understands the business environment in which the company operates

Considers the wider financial and wider commercial implications of his/her actions

Operational & Interpersonal

Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing

Structures and prioritises work effectively

Identifies core of a problem, generates and implements practical solutions

Develops strong working relations inside and outside the team to achieve common goals

Takes personal responsibility for making things happen and achieving results

Understands how his/her role contributes to Scott Wilson’s success; actions demonstrate this understanding

Minimum Requirements

Extensive Design & Design Management relevant experience within a UK Railways environment

Experience of working with and managing major projects

Specific experience relevant to role

Preferred Qualifications


BSc/BEng (Hons) or HNC in relevant subject

Chartered Engineer / Member of Professional Institution
