We have an opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer who is Chartered via either CIBSE or IMechE, and who is looking for technically challenging work on cutting-edge projects, to join our creative and friendly Building Engineering Team in Cardiff.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Currently, the Building Engineering Teams in Cardiff are involved with over 30 projects world-wide from concept design through to practical completion covering commercial, healthcare, education, science and industry, data centres and many other specialist building types, and working alongside the world’s leading architects.

High-profile projects that Building Engineering Cardiff have been instrumental in working on include the following:

• The UK’s first large scale High Energy Proton Beam Therapy Cancer Centre, Manchester

• BBC Wales Broadcasting House, Cardiff

• Datacentres for a number of high profile clients

Key responsibilities:

• Leading the design of the mechanical building systems including air conditioning, heating, natural and mechanical ventilation and building controls

• Leading the development of appropriate building energy strategies and sustainability strategies for buildings, including communicating and agreeing these plans with the project team members and relevant authorities

• Leading the comfort and thermal analysis of buildings and spaces using modelling software such as IES

• Leading the spatial and technical co-ordination of the building services and their integration into the building design

• Managing the production of drawings, reports and specifications

• Supervising and coordinating the work of others and coordinating work with engineers of other disciplines including in-house specialists

• Liaising with the client and other external team members

• Working across multiple projects with different design teams

• Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior members of the team

• Support the Project Manager and Project Director in the commercial management of the project

• Participate in the Arup Mechanical Skills Network

Requirements and skills

We are looking for an enthusiastic engineer with excellent modelling, design, technical, and software skills who enjoys working collaboratively in multi- professional design teams, taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results.

You will be chartered with solid or extensive experience in the field of Building Services Engineering, with a heavy focus on expert use of analysis software and track record of design delivery.


• Degree qualified in Mechanical or HVAC Engineering, ideally to Masters level

• Have achieved Chartered Engineer status via an appropriate professional institution such as IMechE or CIBSE

• Extensive and proven experience in the field of mechanical building services design with experience across a range of project scales and building types

• Experienced in sustainable building design and in satisfying the regulatory and voluntary codes associated with sustainability and energy strategy

• A good awareness of building design beyond own discipline

• Experience of leading teams on multi-disciplinary projects

• Able to understand the balance of engineering priorities on differing projects

• Able to quickly develop successful client relationships
