Senior Social Consultant (French Speaking)

Job Summary

As an integral member of the International Environmental and Social (E&S) Team based in London you will be involved in the delivery of social consulting services to our private sector clients for international projects. Our work helps clients deliver their projects in socially sustainable ways, leading to better outcomes for projects and communities. Our staff gain experience on some of the world’s largest and most challenging projects, working with a diversity of clients and communities in different countries, and across many sectors including oil and gas, power, infrastructure and mining.

Working as either a member of a multidisciplinary team, or directly for clients, you will contribute to the delivery of the social component of projects. This might include developing and implementing social baseline methods (including executing survey questionnaires, focus group discussions, innovative community and stakeholder engagement exercises etc.), assessments of social impacts, defining mitigation measures, determining permitting and regulatory compliance of proposed and/or existing operations, and assisting clients to meet the standards of international lenders. You will also be involved in aiding corporate clients to design social management plans and develop community investment or CSR policies.

Our UK Environment & Planning (E&P) business comprises over 200 people across approximately 20 offices. In London and the South-East we have offices in Aldgate, Wimbledon, Croydon, St Albans, Cambridge and Basingstoke.

The following provides a sample of our recent and current projects:

• ESIA and resettlement services for major infrastructure projects in Gabon.

• ESDD Social monitoring for an oil pipeline in Kenya.

• ESIA for region-wide oil development in Uganda.

• Developing a Community Needs Assessment for social investment in Azerbaijan

• Social component of an ESIA for a solar project in Abu Dhabi.

• Social due diligence for IFI funded infrastructure projects in Nepal.

Job Responsibilities:

Working as either a member of a multidisciplinary team, or directly for clients, you will be responsible for leading the delivery of the social component of projects. This might include:

• developing methodologies for defining the social baseline (including executing survey questionnaires, focus group discussions, innovative community and stakeholder engagement exercises etc.),

• conducting assessments of social impacts,

• defining mitigation measures,

• determining permitting and regulatory compliance of proposed and/or existing operations

• assisting clients to meet the standards of international lenders.

• aiding corporate clients to design community investment and CSR policies

• developing social management plans (e.g. RAPs, compensation plans, and community development plans).

• delivering work through clearly written reports, and, as part of the project team, presentations to clients.

• task management, including coordination and financial management of surveys and local staff.

• aid in compiling major proposals in a coordinating capacity.

Minimum Requirements

You must have international experience outside of UK including some experience in project assessment and evaluation against international standards, such as the IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles, World Bank Safeguard Policies, and/or European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Performance Requirements. You will also have experience with a range of social impact assessment, mitigation and management methodologies.

You will have good communication skills both verbal and written, including demonstrable experience with developing comprehensive written reports.

Fluency in spoken French is essential . Other languages, particularly Spanish and Arabic, would be advantageous.

You will be required to travel internationally, occasionally at short notice, but will be UK based.

For a Senior Social Consultant role you will have demonstrable experience of designing and implementing social consulting projects, including budgeting and task management. For this role you should also have a robust understanding of international standards, with strong experience in ESIA and / or resettlement.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate would ideally have a post-graduate qualification related to social development. Candidates with a relevant under-graduate degree and a comprehensive level of practical experience will also be considered.
