Senior Technology Project Engineer

GKN Aerospace is a Tier 1 supplier of aerospace components, systems and assemblies to a number of major commercial and military aircraft OEMs. The Filton technology team is responsible for the development and integration of a range of exciting advanced machining, automation, assembly and metrology technologies within GKN Aerospace.

The team is currently engaged in a number of research activities, from small dedicated projects to multi-million pound research programmes. We are seeking talented candidates to join our growing team of scientists and engineers responsible for developing world-class aerospace technology.The Candidate will be a senior scientist/engineer specialist, leading programmes and teams to deliver results valued by the business and our customers.

Key Responsibilities
To be the Team Leader on one or more major research projects accountable for their on-time, on-cost, on-quality delivery.

Be a visionary, drive performance, lead change while working in a high-paced team environment, focussed on delivering value to GKN customers.

Conduct research within specific technology projects, supporting delivery to schedule and budget. This will include literature searches, trade studies, trials and data analysis to support TRL/MRL gate reviews, business cases, technical reports and internal and external meetings.

Support investigation of the entire value chain for specific areas of the manufacturing business. This would include development in materials, design, manufacturing and verification; thus identifying opportunities for improvement and new approaches that maximise efficiency and deliver differentiating aerospace manufacturing solutions.

Document research and development activities in technical reports, memos, procedures, specifications and presentations. This will be completed to the highest standard.

Attend conferences, supplier and customer visits to grow and maintain an understanding of the state-of-the-art. Identify opportunities for funding, research support and collaborations.

Build productive working relationships with global technical capabilities including customers, academia, research centres, suppliers and sister GKN sites to maximise the speed and efficiency of technology development and implementation.

Ensure/maintain HSE standards and adherence to processes, developing procedures where required to support the implementation of new technologies at Filton.

Generate and support internal and external communications to inform the business of projects and progress, and promote awareness of the team’s capabilities.

Support bids, proposals and funding applications, internally and externally for government funding, collaborations or joint ventures. This shall include the planning, scheduling and costing of new work packages and technical activities. This will involve liaison with business development, commercial and operations teams.

Work closely with operations to use technology or reduce or eliminate historic non-conformance issues.

Compliance with all risk assessments and company Environment, Health & Safety procedures relevant to all work activities

Reporting of all incidents, accidents and near misses as per the company’s procedure and implementation of identified corrective actions

Maintain good standards of housekeeping in designated work area(s)

Champion ‘Export Control’ compliance activities, ensuring you and where applicable, members of your team, adhere to the site ‘Technical Control Plan (TCP)’, guaranteeing compliance with Export Control Regulations, controls, training and systems.

Qualifications / Experience / Skills
The role requires an innovative individual who is passionate about engineering. The individual will be able to generate and develop new technology concepts to support business and engineering targets.

Degree-qualified (or suitably experienced) engineer with a drive to work in delivering new technologies into the current and the next generation of aircraft.

Holds, or would consider working toward CEng status or equivalent professional registration with a reputable and relevant institution.

Has fundamental knowledge of material properties, metallurgy principles, destructive and non-destructive testing methods, failure modes and analysis techniques. Experience in applying these is preferred.
