Senior Finance and Research Support Officer

This is an excellent opportunity for a self-motivated individual to play a key role in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, supporting the management of the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre (UKCCSRC). The Centre, funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) and member universities, is a virtual hub bringing together leading UK CCS researchers. It has a membership of over 250 academics located across the UK and is supported by staff at University of Sheffield.

This role forms a key operational interface between the collaborating Universities, the Senior Management Team and the Centre staff. The role’s primary focus is provision of centre-related financial management information, research support, centre management administration and advice.

Working closely with Professor Jon Gibbins UKCCSRC Centre Director, Executive Manager and reporting to the Centre’s Finance Manager, you will financially manage the Centres finances and provide wide ranging administrative support for all aspects of the Centre’s research activities, including grant management, HR and administration of the Centre including purchasing and travel arrangements for Sheffield based staff.

You will be educated to degree level or have equivalent experience and will be working towards a relevant accounting qualification. You will have experience of financial administration and research management, including support for EPSRC
funded programmes. You will have strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills and experience of providing a high level of customer service. IT skills including the use of bespoke software and a familiarity with the EPSRC J-eS system are essential. You will be expected to work unsupervised and on your own initiative. Time management and a flexible and positive approach are essential to the role, as is the ability to work unsupervised to a high degree of accuracy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Grant Management and Performance

 Responsible for the day to day financial management of the Centre’s research grants and projects and maintenance of robust records in relation to research finance.

 Preparation of monthly management accounts (financial expenditure statements).

 Resolve research related financial issues and report as appropriate.

 Provide technical expertise for EPSRC related grant issues.

 Provide specialist Centre and EPSRC advice to deal with telephone, email and personal enquiries from staff, students and external bodies.

 Ensure Deputy Directors and other collaborators provide information in a timely manner relating to reports, deliverables and budget information.

 Review, monitor and report on Centre activity to the Research Centre Finance Manager, Executive Manager and PI, raising any concerns including any partner issues, and concerns over any predicted deficit or surplus.

 Maintain appropriate records in relation to research grant administration within the Centre.

Research Support

 Arrange, agenda plan and service EPSRC Centre Board meetings, collating and disseminating paperwork, taking minutes, and following up actions on a timely basis.

 Liaise with colleagues in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Faculty of Engineering to ensure appropriate processes are followed in the administration of the Centre.

 Organise and host occasional visits to the Department from funding bodies, or Centre partners.

 Event management in association with Communications and Research Support officer and Executive Manager.

 General administration tasks associated with the Centre; including timesheets collation, travel arrangements for Sheffield based management.
