Assistant Engineering Technician

The Department is respected internationally for its many important contributions in the field of electronic and electrical engineering (www.shef.ac.uk/eee). We currently have 46 academic staff, including 23 Professors, and a student community of approximately 800 comprising undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research students. Our teaching is underpinned by research at the leading edge, with world-class laboratories available to undergraduates and postgraduates. The Department is organised into three research areas: Semiconductor Materials and Devices, Communications, and Electrical Machines and Drives. The post holder will be a member of the Semiconductor Materials and Devices (SMD) Research Group which has 16 academic staff (including 10 Professors) and a large number of Research Fellows and research students. The Group has
strong international links, close collaboration with industry and a commitment to translation of research into applications and impact. It has a broad range of research interests and is internationally leading in epitaxy and device development. Key research areas include:

• Thermal Imaging - Science and Technology
• Optical Detectors - X-ray, bulk and nanostructure based IR detectors, avalanche photodiodes
• Electronic Devices - GaN Power transistors, carbon nanotubes, graphene
• Microscopy -TEM, Lens-less microscopy
• Semiconductor Light Sources - Quantum Dot, Quantum Cascade, Photonic Crystal AlGaN/GaN

In this role, the successful applicant will provide technical support to the Sensor Systems Group as part of their activities in the production of novel thermal imaging and non-contact temperature measurement systems. A significant part of this role
will be using and maintaining printed electronics equipment. The applicant should have experience in the design and construction of optical systems and a proven ability to produce high quality engineering drawings models using 3D CAD (e.g.
Solid Works , Inventor etc.). The successful applicant will provide the main technical support for a recently secured Optomec AJ300 aerosol printing system and hence experience of maintaining complex laboratory or manufacturing equipment to a high standard is required.

Applicants should possess a good level of education to Diploma/HND/A-level, including Maths and English. Previous experience in a laboratory environment is essential. An understanding of the aerosol electronic printing process and an
understanding of infrared thermometry and thermal imaging is desirable.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide technical support in own area of expertise to colleagues within the lab.

• Support the strategic aims of the Sensor Systems Group to: help undertake novel research in opto-electronic sensor systems; publish high quality journal papers; develop ideas for new research studies; provide support to secure new research contracts; and exploit research outputs commercially.

• Undertake the work necessary to provide technical support for the design and building of opto-mechanical lens assemblies as directed by line-manager and ensure timely delivery of work.

• Ensure timely delivery of work.

• Develop the recipes for printing contemporary and novel electronics using an aerosol printer.

• Maintain the group’s aerosol printer, including cleaning, updating with new functionality (when appropriate) and taking responsibility for day-to-day health and safety (including COSHH).

• Using appropriate software such as Zemax and Inventor: develop/assist in the development of system architecture concepts, schematic designs, component definitions and bills of materials.

• Assist in maintaining comprehensive research documentation, including design notes, calculations and analysis, circuit schematics, test data and material for research reviews.

• Assist in the timely delivery of project milestones.

• Work professionally in the best interests of our research group at all times.

• Contribute to achieving the University’s Mission, Vision and Identity.

• Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post.
