Maths and Statistics Tutor

Summary:

This position will play an integral role in the successful running and further development of maths and statistics support provision delivered by the Maths and Statistics Help (MASH) Centre at 301 Student Skills and Development Centre.
Established in early 2013, 301 provides students with a holistic experience of skills support services and development opportunities.

The Maths and Statistics Tutor will have the opportunity to lead on specific activities relating to maths and statistics, provide 1:1 support for students, and contribute to the development of high quality online and face-to-face learning resources which enable students to fulfil their academic potential and become graduates who are confident in their quantitative skills. The tutor will enhance the support provided at key transition stages for students by identifying and/or producing new self-study resources for maths and statistics, suitable for HE preparation and foundation through to final year and post graduate project work.

You will have a good honours degree in maths and/or statistics or related subject with substantial maths content. We are particularly interested in someone with a strength in maths teaching and an enthusiasm for engaging learners with maths. The help we provide covers a wide range of levels, abilities and transitions: from maths support for pre-entry students; to support for undergraduate needs; and help with project analysis statistics for students studying non-statistics degrees.

The post holder will:

• Provide maths and statistics support to individual students and small groups

• Work with the MASH Lead Practitioner to review the approach to maths and statistics support and introduce suitable improvements

• Work with academic departments to identify areas for maths and statistics skills development and develop tailored sessions for delivery

• Design and deliver engaging and interactive workshops that support students to develop a wide range of maths and statistics skills and enable them to fulfil their academic potential

• Deliver workshops, review and update the workshop programme, ensuring what we offer continues to meet the needs and requirements of a diverse student body

• Recruit, train and assist with the supervision of a team of postgraduate tutors

• Contribute to the development of high quality online and VLE resources to complement the MASH face-to-face services

• Plan, design, develop, construct and refine the MASH maths and statistics question database

• Monitor and maintain records/reports to meet both internal and external requirement

• Work with all the services operating at 301 Student Skills and Development Centre

• Play an active role in the promotion of both the 301 and MASH Centres to internal and external audiences

• Attend external meetings and liaise with external contacts to seek out good practice and report on work issues

• Undertake research into the efficacy of the support being provided using suitable research techniques; make recommendations and disseminate as appropriate
