We are developing an architecture and solution assurance function to support changes in IT governance. This will be responsible for the quality of solutions (ie projects and change) being delivered to the business. It covers alignment of a
solution with strategy, scope and approach, as well as providing a design authority that will approve the design of new systems and services.

The Solution Architect is a new post within this function, and will:

• Lead on the development of architectures that meet the current and future needs of the business

• Contribute to the solution design of specific projects

We are looking for a Technical/Solutions Architect. Your principal responsibilities will be as follows:

• You will develop and maintain a model of the University’s current and future solution and technical architecture

• You will ensure that solution architecture is designed with the business needs in mind and that solutions are
sustainable

• You will lead in designing, specifying and selecting information systems solutions

• You will work with the business, project managers, project and infrastructure teams to design and deliver solutions to
specific business needs

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a model of the University’s current and future solution and technical architecture and ensure that solution architecture is designed in conjunction both with business needs in mind and that solutions are sustainable

• Develop and champion solution architectural principals and templates to deliver cost effective and sustainable IT enabled processes within the University

• Lead in designing, specifying and selecting information system solutions, considering functionality, data, security, integration, infrastructure and performance

• Liaise with clients, business representatives and other professional staff in the University to understand both the strategy of the overall organisation and CiCS departmental strategy, and design information system solutions to meet specific business needs that yield an effective return on investment

• Ensure that technical solution definitions include appropriate technical and solution assurance mechanisms including relevant functional and non-functional requirements and validation mechanisms

• Work with the business and Business Analysts in the capture and analysis of requirements, and with Project Managers to develop high level project schedule resource plans for implementation

• Work with project, feature and infrastructure teams to ensure compliance to solution architectural design and ensure that project scope is maintained

• Lead the organisation in exploiting technology and use knowledge of IT solutions to drive organisational change and support business process design

• Maintain an awareness of and investigate technologies and information systems that might benefit the University, and identify and mitigate existing business risks or risks relating to the current solution architecture

• Understand and provide architectural guidance to project teams developing solutions, and render consulting and technical support services for project implementation

• Estimate cost, and assist in preparing business cases for IT solutions, considering infrastructure, licenses, development and support

• Review proposals from vendors and suppliers for any project that requires external input to ensure architectural compliance and that such inputs are delivered in the most cost effective way

• Identify the necessary server, storage and software configurations and liaise with colleagues in the other technical teams to ensure these are implemented

• Work as a member of project and development teams, as well as independently, on a number of projects.
