Linux Systems Manager/Research Programmer

Summary: We are seeking an experienced Linux Systems Manager / Research Programmer to provide professional computer systems support to the Particle Physics and Particle Astrophysics Group within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Sheffield. You will manage the IT requirements of the Group and provide professional, specialised IT support. You will be the main point of contact for both staff and postgraduate students for computing related queries providing detailed and specialist information and guidance, diagnosing and solving technical problems. You will monitor and maintain computing equipment, resolving issues with hardware and software, be responsible for procuring computing equipment and consumables, the configuration of computers to user requirements and for continued development and enhancement of the systems tailored to our particle physics needs. You will have sole responsibility for the IT support in the Group and be required to work independently and proactively. This will include participation in development of research software as required by specific particle physics experiments undertaken by the group. You should have a good honours degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant subject area and will hold a relevant qualification or equivalent experience with installing and configuring Linux systems. You should have a good understanding of current and legacy computer systems, software and hardware and the ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and solve computer faults, as well as the technical and manual skills to carry out repairs on both PC and Apple machines.
