Senior Transport Planner

Job Summary
AECOM is hiring a Senior Transport Planner to be based in St Albans.

We work in all aspects of transport planning, but particularly in multi-modal transport planning and modelling. We are currently expanding our team in the London and St. Albans offices. We have a vacancy for a Senior Transport Planner to join our leading transport planning consultancy in the South East, within the Policy & Evaluation team in St Albans. Reporting to the Policy & Evaluation team leader you will provide technical support into assigned tasks ensuring successful delivery of technically challenging projects and managing junior staff on projects. You will have a balance of quantitative and qualitative skills and a desire to expand your and others’ knowledge and capabilities within transport planning, and a proactive approach to contributing to and attending internal and external seminars, conferences, as well as team and project meetings and workshops.

Job Duties:
As a Senior Consultant you will be expected to mentor graduates, impart your wisdom and check tasks undertaken by your more junior colleagues. You should have the ability to handle the project management of smaller projects, including cost control and client liaison.
You will:
Manage your time to ensure you meet deadlines.
Explain technical concepts to others, especially our graduates and clients.
Provide direction and technical advice to junior project team members, taking a proactive role in developing team members to their full potential.
Support bidding and work winning opportunities.
Oversee and conduct planning and technical work and generate solutions under limited supervision.
Support the development and presentation of solutions and alternative solutions to clients.
Review strategies, business cases or evaluation documents for quality of technical content.
Prepare or supervise preparation of technical presentations and present information to internal and external groups.
Support the preparation, development and analysis of transport model inputs or outputs and the production of appraisals and data reports for a range of major and minor projects.
Project manage small (or elements of larger) projects, managing the production of analysis and associated outputs, ensuring the integrity of these outputs.
Promote and market all facets of AECOM’s services during interfaces with clients, other sectors / disciplines and externally at seminars and conferences and build networks within the industry, consolidating both company and personal credibility in the industry.
Undertake continuous professional development and seek to achieve relevant accreditation.
Participate in cross-office projects and proposals.
Specific Skills Required
You will have an understanding of the principles of highways, public and active travel transport planning, policy, appraisal and evaluation
You will have an appreciation of transport planning best practice such as WebTAG or TfL’s Business Case Development Manual
You have used and have good knowledge of TUBA or equivalent software or spreadsheet based approaches to economic appraisal; or proven analytical and statistical skills; or proven experience in multi-criteria appraisals/ optioneering and the ability to analyse and synthesise qualitative information
You will have an interest in and knowledge of future transport innovations
You need to have excellent technical and report writing and presentational skills
You need excellent analytical skills, and be proficient in the use of Excel, Access or similar packages to analyse data
You will have knowledge of the UK transport industry, policy and funding environment as well as knowledge of the application of appraisal and/or evaluation techniques
You have the ability to communicate technical and non-technical information internally and externally through written and verbal means
You should have the ability to handle the project management of smaller projects, including cost control and liaising with and presenting to clients

Minimum Requirements
You will have an analytical mind and background – you want to know the ‘whys’ and ‘wherefores’ of things
You are good at managing your time to ensure you anticipate task delivery and checking that you meet those pesky deadlines
You have a positive attitude and are approachable to junior colleagues
And you should be able to explain technical concepts to others, especially our graduates and anyone else who may ask in an engaging and inclusive manner
