Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Residence Life team at the University of Sheffield, which has been Top 3 in Student Experience for seven years running. Residence Life provides welfare support, activities, leadership opportunities,
sports, and also oversee conduct within University Accommodation. The Residence Life Officer (Engagement & Development) oversees the living and learning aspect of the Residence Life Programme. The programme is crucial for ensuring a smooth transition from home to University life as well as enhancing the residential experience. Responsibilities of the post include providing a wide variety of engagement opportunities for our students in residence, in connection with the wider academic context of the University. This dynamic programme is delivered in partnership with the Students’ Union and Sport Sheffield and helps create a sense of belonging amongst the students. Other duties include line management of a number of staff and assisting the Residence Life Manager, along with two other officers, in daily operations and development of the Residence Life programme.

We are seeking enthusiastic candidates with experience in working with university students, as well as event management. As this role involves contributing to the overall Residence Life strategy, you will also need experience/knowledge of issues
pertaining to student development, student-related issues in UK Higher Education, and planning and aligning the work of the team to the strategic vision.

You should also have line management experience, which will allow you to motivate and guide your team.

Job Description
Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist in ensuring that students in University owned or managed accommodation are given numerous and diverse opportunities for engagement and development, primarily through a rich and inspiring programme of events, sports, activities, and leadership roles.
• Liaise and build relationships with all stakeholders and providers, most notably ACS, Sport Sheffield, The Students’ Union and other relevant University departments, to ensure the delivery of partnership campaigns and projects (such as community living; health and wellbeing, study and life skills; social sport; leadership; entertainment; Give it a Go activities; charity; volunteering; green impact; money management, themed weeks and other activities) aimed at engaging all resident students as well as specific resident student groups such as, but not limited to postgraduates, non-EU, LGBT+ and students with disabilities.
• Ensure that the Engagement & Development programme delivered to student residents achieves learning themes, as set by the strategic plan, in four main categories: Residential Experience, Education & Skills, Social Responsibility, and Healthy Lifestyles.
• Recruit Residence Life staff at appropriate level (e.g. Residence Life Coordinators and Residence Life Intern); liaise with key stakeholders and providers (particularly ACS, Sport Sheffield, the Students’ Union and Student Services) as appropriate.
• Identify, organise and deliver training, induction and coaching to Residence Life staff at appropriate level and undertake direct line management responsibilities for Residence Life Coordinators and Residence Life Intern; liaise with key stakeholders as appropriate.
• Oversee the activities of Residence Life Coordinators (Engagement & Development; Events & Activities), including planning and allocating resources, organising and supervising work-loads, and chairing regular team meetings; liaise with key stakeholders as appropriate.
• Oversee all aspects of the Residence Life Intern programme, including recruitment, organising projects, preparing for compliance checks, providing logistical support (meet and greet upon arrival, arranging housing, pre-departure orientation, etc.), providing pastoral support (cultural differences, homesickness, etc.), and identifying and providing professional development opportunities.
• Assist in the recruitment of Activity Reps and Residence Mentors on a yearly basis.
