Associate Social Media Officer

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

Social media is the one of the most compelling and fastest-growing ways to reach and engage with public audiences around the world. Through institutional and personal accounts, UNHCR and its staff are able to engage vast online communities with timely, authoritative information and perspectives about the rights and needs of people fleeing war and persecution.

Working closely with the Senior Regional Communications Officer and the global Social Media Unit (within the Communications and Public Information Service), the Associate Social Media Officer (Regional Communications Hub, Mexico City) will manage UNHCR¿s global Spanish-language accounts and guide the production of social media content in Spanish, with an eye to strengthening engagement with key audiences in support of UNHCR¿s media relations, advocacy, awareness-raising and fundraising objectives.

The incumbent will work to develop and refine UNHCR¿s Spanish-language social media presence by strengthening editorial coordination; training colleagues to use social media effectively; monitoring public conversations on social media; and engaging target audiences while addressing and averting potentially damaging conversations.

FUNCTIONAL STATEMENT

Accountability
- UNHCR¿s Spanish-language social media content is produced and managed in line with strategic objectives, bringing key messages to clearly defined audiences (i.e. news media, influencers, general public, governments, private donors, persons of concern, etc.).
- UNHCR¿s Spanish-language content reaches key online communities through close alignment of web publishing, social media engagement, advocacy and fundraising campaigns, and partnering with news/media organizations.
- UNHCR¿s Spanish-language social media accounts operate in a manner that advances the organization¿s broader communications goals and maximizes engagement with priority audiences.

Responsibility
- Ensure on a daily basis that compelling social media posts are curated and created for global Spanish-speaking audiences on the ACNUR accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.), using content produced by a range of teams across UNHCR. This will include video, photo, material published on unhcr.org, and fundraising and special projects.
- Liaise with the Social Media Unit to coordinate content production and publication, including original content from Latin America as well as content adapted from English into Spanish.
- Train colleagues in the Latin America region to produce original content for individual and institutional accounts.
- Work closely with colleagues in PI and the Americas Bureau to ensure all social media posts are on message and approved.
- Ensure proactive and consistent community listening/monitoring (including evenings and weekends), management, and on-message engagement.
- Ensure that social media channels are uploaded with posts each day (2-3 Facebook posts/day; 24-48 tweets/day).
- Contribute to and execute a social media strategy for UNHCR¿s Spanish-language accounts that focuses on key audiences (news media, general public, donors), leverages opportunities for greater community engagement, and ensures the accounts¿ security and accountability.
- Establish and nurture relationships within Spanish-language media partners (including news organizations, social media companies and relevant technology leaders) to strengthen UNHCR¿s social media content and help it reach a wide audience.
- Contribute to weekly statistical reporting by Social Media Unit and help adhere to clear performance and measurement metrics for social media accounts and campaigns to effectively inform results-based decision making and to monitor and drive the effective use of resources.

Authority
- Decide on social media content for UNHCR¿s Spanish-language social media accounts and platforms reaching different target communities.
- Post to UNHCR Spanish-language social media accounts.
- Manage user roles on UNHCR Spanish-language social media accounts.

ESSENTIAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Undergraduate degree (equivalent of a BA/BS), ideally in Journalism, Communications, International Relations or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience (2 years with graduate degree (equivalent of a Master's)) in progressively responsible functions producing, editing and disseminating multimedia content for online audiences ¿ ideally for media outlets, international brands, political parties, NGOs, or other international institutions.
