Summary:
Chemical and Biological Engineering is a thriving department within the University’s Faculty of Engineering, comprising 34 academic staff, 41 research staff and technicians, 11 support staff and over 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Department has a vibrant research and teaching culture spanning particle science and technology/nanotechnology, new energy technologies, the environment and applications of post-genomics bioscience for biotechnology and bioprocessing applications.

This position will be under the direct supervision of Dr Jonathan Howse and Dr Denis Cumming looking at the development of a lab-scale acid dew point test rig. The work will be split into (i) development of a rig for replicating flue-gas, (ii) quantitative testing of current sensor technology, and (iii) modification of existing sensors and development of novel sensors for performance improvements.

You will be involved in the development of a lab scale flue-gas stack environment for testing Sulphuric Acid Dew Point Sensors. This will involve the controlled mixing of component gas streams in a heated environmental chamber, containing a variety of chemical and electrical sensors.

Job Description
Main Duties and Responsibilities
• Development of a lab scale flue-gas stack environment for testing Sulphuric Acid Dew Point Sensors. This will involve the controlled mixing of component gas streams in a heated environmental chamber, containing a variety of chemical and electrical sensors.
• In collaboration with the industrial sponsor, you will test and develop existing sensors, with the aim of improving their sensitivity and performance characteristics through a variety of chemical and physical modification to existing sensors.
• Lab scale and pilot plant scale testing will be conducted at The University of Sheffield main campus and at a remote site (Harper Hill, Buxton), respectively.
• Develop computer controlled, bespoke, conductivity analysis system to replicate manufacturers test equipment.
• Analysis, preparation, and presentation of results for technical report to the sponsor and for potential submission to high impact international journals (if appropriate).
• Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post, including Health and Safety and laboratory management
