The Department of Estates and Facilities Management (EFM) at the University of Sheffield is responsible for the management of the University's estate including managing property and facilities and developing new buildings.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the University of Sheffield in house Landscape Service team whose core role is the management of the grounds within the University estate. The in house Tree Team are responsible for the maintenance, tree retention and statutory works that we as stewards of the estate provide. We currently have in excess of 10000 mature trees which are managed in accordance with the University’s Tree Management Programme.

We are seeking an experienced and qualified arborist who would play an integral role in working with our diverse portfolio of trees who will assist us in meeting all strategic and safety procedures.

The post will operate on an agreed annualised hours based contract. This will operate on the basis of a 40 hour week April to September and 30 hour week October to March.

Job Description
Main Duties and Responsibilities
• Deliver high quality tree works including planned and reactive works using safe systems of work.
• Work effectively with the Tree Team Leader prioritising workloads throughout the calendar year, planning ahead as required.
• In the absence of the Tree Team Leader you will plan, organise and delegate tasks effectively within your team ensuring the efficiencies of the team are maintained.
• Respond and adapt quickly as situations change during the working day.
• Comply with all current health and safety legislation and encourage best practice within the team at all times.
• Report any site related health and safety issues to the Landscape Services Manager as soon as reasonably practicable.
• Promote the Landscape service team and consistently strive to improve standards and service delivery.
• Adopt a process of continuous improvements setting high quality standards and professional delivery.
• Assist the Landscape services team with the visual surveying of all trees on campus and keeping accurate records of condition and risk as required.
• Monitor trees following any periods of adverse weather.
• Participate in the on call rota to ensure effective safe management of the University at all times.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with clients and represent EFM in a positive manner at all times.
• Ensure excellent communications are maintained with all departments and customers directly affected by work or surveys, and that where risks exist they are clearly communicated to ensure staff and students are assured about safe working practices and the level of disruption to normal activity.
• Attend training appropriate to the role and ensure continuous professional development
• Work with the Lead Arborist to record the usage of the team’s tools, machinery and servicing.
• Work flexibly in a multi-skilled capacity across Landscape Services Team as required by the Landscape Services Manager.
• Provide effective communication with the Landscape Services Manager and report any unplanned changes affecting the scheduled works.
• Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post.
