Senior Ecologist

Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Senior Ecologist or Senior Ecological Consultant to be based at the Nottingham office. This ecologist will expand and strengthen our very busy team of ecologists in Central England following our continuing success and strong order book.The Senior Ecologist will deliver ecological consultancy and advisory services to both internal and external clients to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget.
This Senior Ecological Consultant will have the opportunity to work across the UK and Ireland on high profile, challenging and innovative projects. Although the majority of work is in the UK, candidates with appropriate experience and skills may have the opportunity to work overseas from time to time.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and organised, with experience in managing small and medium sized projects and budgets. Due to the nature of the work as well as working as part of a team, there will be independent working too as such the successful Senior Ecologist will be able to be self-reliant, resourceful, and to be a self-starter. Excellent report-writing are a must.

Job Duties:
Working as part of the existing network of AECOM ecologists;
Leading on winning a wide range of ecological work;
Supporting internal clients with delivering the ecological requirements within multi-disciplinary tenders and projects;
Working independently, or with other ecologists and professionals, in the planning, delivery and management of protected species and habitat surveys; analysis and evaluation of results, impacts assessments, and the design and implementation of successful mitigation strategies including European Protected Species licence applications within budgets and deadlines;
Assisting with managing the technical and financial performance of ecological and Environmental Impact Assessment projects;
Building and maintaining both internal and external client relationships, including providing urgent ecological response and / or advice in person, by email or over the phone;
Communicating effectively with their line manager, project managers, clients, project teams and other members of the ecology team, within projects and with clients by telephone, e-mail, letters and reports;
Developing and promoting best practice and innovation across the ecology business;
Compliance with internal business management procedures, including in relation to health and safety and technical quality of all advice and outputs; and development of the ecology team or support wider environmental business goals, as required.

Our UK Ecology Team comprises over 100 ecologists based across the UK and covers all freshwater, marine and terrestrial habitats. We provide our clients with the full range of ecological services including specialist habitat and species surveys, impact assessment, advice on biodiversity mitigation, offsetting and enhancement, and management planning for biodiversity. Our projects include high profile major transport and other infrastructure, conventional and renewable power development, as well as other industrial and commercial development projects in the UK, continental Europe and Africa. The busy Birmingham and Nottingham ecology teams are working on numerous ongoing projects, mainly in the Midlands. There is also scope to be involved in projects further afield.

Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate will:
have substantial field survey and report writing experience;
have experience of managing teams on ecological or wildlife or biodiversity projects;
have experience assisting in the co-ordination of surveys;
have experience providing advice to clients on a wide range of topics;
hold a recognised degree in a biological, science or related discipline;
possess one or more protected species licences; and
have a proven track record of providing terrestrial ecological inputs to projects, including assessment in accordance with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

Relevant post graduate qualification in the one of these would be advantageous;
Evidence of ongoing vocational training,
Be eligible for or have full membership of CIEEM.
