Apprenticeship opportunities at Arup

If you enjoy problem solving, designing, working with new technology, and are good with numbers, Arup has a range of opportunities in their civil engineering, building services, structures, rail design and transport planning teams.

John Turzynski, Director, Arup states:

"We’re looking for dynamic and dedicated individuals to join us as apprentices, with a desire to take the first step towards a long and fulfilling career.

The Arup apprenticeship gives you an unrivalled opportunity to put your skills to the test and your imagination to work on inspiring, high-profile projects. It’s just one way we’re developing the skills of young people in the local UK communities we work in.

“Our work within the built environment and infrastructure sectors across the country provides a fertile ground for us to recruit a number of apprentices in a number of areas – something which we will continue to actively support. Our approach will not only assist in providing us with the skills we need for the future, but also provide opportunities to those individuals interested in developing their careers in engineering, planning, design or business”.

A prestigious apprenticeship programme

The Arup apprenticeship allows you to study for an academic qualification while working and learning in offices alongside respected, technical professionals.

As an apprentice, you’ll study at a local college on day release, working towards an accredited qualification and combine this experience with workplace learning. Some apprenticeships, for example in HR or finance, take place entirely within the workplace.

Whichever your chosen apprenticeship, you’ll be given a mentor who’ll guide you through your professional and personal development. You’ll also have regular contact with our learning and development advisor.

Building Arup’s skills base

Arup plans to recruit apprentices into disciplines including civil and structural engineering, building services engineering, rail design engineering, business and admin, IT and telecoms, project management, transport planning, mechanical and electrical design and construction management.

The increase in the number of new recruits is a sign of the strength of the market - it needs these skills. Arup strongly supports the apprenticeship scheme as a way of growing their own resource base.

Currently, Arup have apprentices studying the following subjects:

Accountancy, Building services, Business and admin, Civil engineering, Digital consulting, Environmental consulting, Project management, Quantity surveying, Rail design, Structural engineering, Transport planning.

The experience

The best people to describe the experience are the apprentices themselves. Find out how one A-Level student has developed her technical skills on UK mega-project High Speed 2, working on everything from computer aided design (CAD) to community relations. Apprentices like Jamie-Lee bring enthusiasm and skills and in return Arup offers support via training and mentoring on some of the country’s most high-profile and demanding projects.

An award-winning programme

In 2016, Arup was once again recognised as one of the UK’s Top 60 Employers of Apprentices – and continue to be an employer of choice for young people.
