"Degree apprenticeships give you the best of both worlds," says Martha Smith, an Undergraduate Environmental Consultant and apprentice at WSP UK, speaking live to BBC Sussex & Surrey radio as part of the UK's National Apprenticeship Week.
Martha's radio interview followed the launch of the UK Government Department of Education's Get the Jump campaign, which raises awareness of all the different education and training pathways open to young people.
Gaining experience while earning a salary
But what does Martha mean, "the best of both worlds"?
"You get to go to university once a week and also work for a company. Your degree is funded, you have a salary, and you get to have that hands-on experience," explained Martha.
WSP apprenticeships enable the apprentice to gain experience at the same time as taking nationally-recognized qualifications and earning a salary. A large part of learning is on-the-job practical experience and working on live projects. WSP provides dedicated, structured courses to support apprentices during the transition from study to a business environment.

On the subject of apprenticeships, Martha added: "I'm also getting five years experience...[and] at the end of my apprenticeship, I'll have so much knowledge about the industry and the workplace that will put me in good stead for the future."
