Barbara Levi takes on Group Executive role with Rio Tinto

Prime employer for women Rio Tinto appoints Barbara Levi as Group Executive, Group General Counsel.

Barbara is an Italian citizen and has over 20 years’ experience in a number of senior legal roles across Europe and in the US, both in corporate and private practice. She joined Novartis in 2004 where she is Group Legal Head, M&A and Strategic Transactions, and has held a variety of positions including General Counsel, Sandoz, from 2016-2019. She was also previously Global Legal Head, Product Strategy & Commercialisation, Pharma.

Significant experience across ethics, integrity and governance

Barbara has gained significant experience across ethics, integrity and governance, having been Head of the Anti-Bribery & Corruption Practice Team, the Trade Sanctions Practice Team and Head of Legal & Compliance, Region AMAC (Africa, Middle East, Asian Countries) & GEM (Growth Emerging Markets), at Novartis.

Barbara also spent several years as a corporate and transactional attorney with law firms in New York City and Milan. She is an attorney-at-law, admitted to the US Supreme Court, the New York Bar, and the Italian Bar in Milan.

Committed to creating diverse and inclusive working environments

Barbara is passionate about leadership and gender equality and, as the mother of four children, she has a wide interest in societal and community topics. Interestingly, Barbara has served as a board member of the International School in Basel from February 2015 to June 2016.

Known for championing inclusion and diversity, Barbara has been quoted as saying: "If people enjoy working in a place, you have created a diverse and inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels empowered and respected."
