Each year, the first week of February sees World Interfaith Harmony Week. This key opportunity serves to help reinforce inclusion and belonging among all faiths.

Mutual understanding and interreligious dialogue constitute important dimensions of a peace society, so World Interfaith Harmony Week promotes cohesion among all people regardless of their faith.

Encouraging interfaith harmony in the workplace

By embracing World Interfaith Harmony Week in the workplace, employers can enhance people’s knowledge, cultivate more tolerant attitudes, and establish mutual respect. Likewise, celebrating World Interfaith Harmony Week reinforces that people from different communities can come together to create an inclusive and harmonious working environment.

At the core of all faith systems and traditions is a notion that people can love and support one another to live in harmony and peace in an environmentally sustainable world.

Our world continues to be beset by conflict and intolerance with rising number of refugees and the internally displaced in a hostile and unwelcoming world around them. We are also unfortunately witnessing messages of hate spreading discord among people. The need for spiritual collaboration has never been greater.

Communication can cultivate peace

Global spiritual leader, poet and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us that: "In dialogue, we allow what is beautiful, peaceful and meaningful in the other to transform us."

Meanwhile, South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader and philanthropist Nelson Mandela surmised that, "When we lose the right to be different, we lose the right to be free."

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr highlighted that dialogue is key: "People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they have not communicated with each other."

And as Poet Rumi penned: "All religions. All this singing. One song..."
