Medtronic Australasia: Employer of choice for gender equality

Medtronic Australasia: Employer of choice for gender equality

 March 18, 2022

Medtronic Australasia, a subsidiary of Medtronic plc - a global leader in healthcare technology - has been recognised by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) as an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality (EOCGE).

The citation makes Medtronic one of only 120 organisations in Australia to be recognised, and demonstrates its commitment to gender equality

Active commitment to achieving workplace gender equality

WGEA is the Australian Government’s statutory agency that promotes and improves workplace gender equality. The EOCGE citation is a voluntary leading-practice recognition program designed to encourage, recognise and promote organisations’ active commitment to achieving gender equality in Australian workplaces.

Liz Carnabuci, vice president and managing director for Medtronic Australasia explained the EOCGE citation was a testament to how Medtronic brought to life its Mission and inclusive culture

“Part of our Mission is to recognise the personal worth of all our employees and to provide them with a framework that advances opportunities and equity. We have an ongoing commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity and we’re pleased to see this recognised externally,” said Liz.

Leading change-makers in the industry

According to WGEA, EOCGE citation holders are some of Australia’s leading change-makers who drive and embed gender quality in their workplace.

Karen Newell, ANZ director for Human Resources, added that the citation built on Medtronic’s recent recognition as an employer of choice

“Over the past 12 months, Medtronic has been recognised for our efforts in employee engagement and Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, having been named a Best Place to Work and one of LinkedIn’s Top Companies. This citation from WGEA as an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality adds to this list of recent achievements and we look forward to continuing building on this,” said Karen.

Initiatives and programs to promote equality

Some of the initiatives and programs Medtronic has run successfully to promote gender equality in the workplace and foster inclusion, diversity and equity (ID&E) include:

  • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and Committees – in line with Medtronic’s desire to foster belonging for all employees, the ANZ Medtronic Women’s Network and Men Advocating Equity ERGs spearhead initiatives that drive greater gender equity (e.g., YesFlex, Parental Leave Support programs, Circle In, Fearless Females series, Project Hope - an initiative aimed at establishing a network of support and increased awareness for employees impacted by pregnancy, infant and child loss).
  • Health, Wellbeing and Leave policies and benefits – Medtronic provides paid parental leave policies and progressive practices; superannuation payment for employees on unpaid parental leave; accrual of long service leave while on unpaid parental leave; purchase of additional leave; family care leave policy (six weeks’ additional paid leave) and other programs designed to support the transition of employees taking and returning from parental leave.
  • Ongoing and considerable focus on engagement and inclusion – Medtronic engages leaders and employees to be part of the efforts in driving greater engagement and inclusion. The company also look at these results and data with a gender lens to ensure all genders enjoy a positive employee experience.
