From dairy farm to a legal career: why Tamara loves Vodafone

Tamara grew up on a dairy farm in rural Australia, and now she really loves working for Vodafone; a company that empowers lives through technology and mobile connection. "This is such a great equalizer for those living in rural areas and outside the cities, which I very much relate to having been a late starter to technology due to living in a remote area," says Tamara.

Tamara started her career straight from school when she joined PricewaterhouseCoopers in Sydney. She did a cadetship programme where she studied at university part-time in the evenings and also had a full-time job, so she was learning throughout her degree. Tamara then went on to qualify as a Chartered Accountant and got a good grounding in finance and audit.

Giving back through volunteering with the Vodafone Foundation

Tamara quickly packed away the calculator and took up the urge to get involved in volunteering, so she applied to the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development programme. "This involved me living and working in the Philippines for a year on a poverty reduction programme, where I helped improve the rollout of small community businesses in rural areas," explains Tamara. "I have been able to continue to be involved in volunteering and giving back to the community in my time at Vodafone. The Vodafone Foundation is one of the main reasons I’m so proud to work at Vodafone and it’s something all employees can get actively involved in. Since joining I have cycled from Land’s End to John o’ Groats, as well as completed an ultra marathon to raise money for the Vodafone Foundation!"

A move to the other side of the world

Tamara came to London in 2014 with the goal to do as much travelling as possible. "I re-joined PricewaterhouseCoopers and had some amazing opportunities to travel far and wide, including a business trip to Turkey in 2010 where I worked on a Vodafone assignment." This was Tamara's first interaction with Vodafone, but she knew then it was a company that she really wanted to know more about. "I enjoyed the people I met in the company and the way they worked," continues Tamara. "So when an opportunity came up to join the legal team, I was eager to come on board!"

An amazing legal career at Vodafone

Tamara describes her career at Vodafone as "amazing". Her role has grown and expanded so much since she first joined, offering many new challenges and opportunities. "I now lead the global compliance team which includes managing the Code of Conduct, the ‘Doing What’s Right’ engagement programme for employees, the anti-bribery, sanctions and trade controls programmes, and also the Corporate Secretariat, which is responsible for Vodafone’s listing on the London Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq in the US," says Tamara.
