Arup is a top employer for women

The UK needs 1.8 million more engineers by 2020. This means more opportunities for women who seek an interesting and challenging career.

Arup is reaping the rewards from an ever more diverse workforce. With some 31% female employees in the UK in 2016, Arup has more female leaders than ever before, growing to 19.4% in the UK in 2016, significantly higher than the industry average.

Arup has been listed in the Times Top 50 Employers for Women every year from 2011 to 2016. Alan Belfield, UKMEA Region Chair, says “This award recognises our firm as one of the top 50 companies in the UK that are leading the way in gender equality in the workplace”.

“Being shortlisted for a sixth time inspires us to keep the momentum going and do better for our colleagues at present and in the future”.

Diverse and inclusive working culture

You'll join a dedicated firm of multicultural people with first-class qualifications and enviable reputations in a wide range of applied science, engineering and management disciplines. Arup's people are at the heart of their reputation for reliably delivering innovative and cost-effective solutions. Providing an inclusive and supportive workplace is a key priority for Arup.

Arup has signed up to the CEO Charter for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET), and to the WISE Ten Steps campaign to promote women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). Arup is a corporate partner of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) CEO Statement of Support for Women’s Empowerment Principles. In 2016, it has signed up to the National Equality Standard to keep diversity and inclusion at the top of the leadership agenda. Arup is also an active supporter of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Diversity in Engineering Programme.

Attracting, developing and retaining female talent

Arup has developed partnerships with key organisations to help promote engineering and STEM subjects to talented students. In 2015, 35% of their new graduates were female and they recruited 40 nationalities from 93 universities. Their UKMEA Diversity and Inclusion Strategy seeks to create conditions where staff are treated solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential. To support women’s career development, training for leaders and managers raises self-awareness of conscious and unconscious bias. Arup also aims to reward all employees in a fair and unbiased way and share success with everyone.

Supporting women in the workplace

Programmes designed to support women at Arup on their career paths include mentoring, a well-established and active Connect Women group, leadership training, flexible working policies and a working culture that empowers women to excel.

A unique environment

Arup follows the business principles of their founder, Ove Arup, set out in his Key Speech. Join Arup and you'll have the freedom to push boundaries and the space to explore your career as you take responsibility for helping Arup shape a better world.

Arup believes in ‘inclusive design’ and encourages clients to think about diversity and inclusion on their projects. This encompasses the whole business, from accessibility or religious considerations in buildings, to how a team is project managed, to the impact of strategic planning on a community.

Alan Belfield, UKMEA Region Chair, says “Diversity is imperative for any organisation but especially one like ours where diversity of thought is at the heart of our creativity and innovation. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment enabling staff to thrive and reach their full potential”.
