What does equity look like?

For Medtronic, it looks like the private sector stepping up and leading, with measurable outcomes, attainable goals and countless opportunities for all.

Medtronic’s Geoff Martha has joined further CEOs across different companies, states and industries to take action through OneTen and close the “opportunity gap” that prevents millions of Black Americans from having access to economic opportunities, gainful employment, education and training.

Collectively, the founding companies have committed to train, hire, and advance one million Black Americans over the next 10 years into family-sustaining skilled jobs with opportunities for advancement.

Putting actions behind words when it comes to inclusion

CEO Geoff Martha explains why joining OneTen and the company's broader DE&I efforts are business imperatives for success.

"We decided to join OneTen for one simple reason. At Medtronic, we believe in putting actions behind our words when it comes to inclusion, diversity and equity," explains Geoff. "And we're committed to recruiting and developing diverse talent."

"Inclusion, diversity and equity is not a program at Medtronic. It's a clear business strategy for sustainable growth."

Geoff adds how it's difficult to implement successful development or recruitment programs "without the right environment." Plus, Medtronic can't make progress if employees leave due to lack of support. "There has to be net growth," Geoff insists.

"So with an inclusive environment established, we are intentional in our recruiting and join specific events or conferences with organizations like historically black colleges," he continues. This includes Medtronic's partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, through which the company has created scholarships and internships for students of color.

It's clear that Medtronic is taking action within and outside the company to create a more diverse workforce.
