Arcadis helps students design, create and innovate

 August 01, 2022

Arcadis is an employer that gives back to its community.

Talented candidates can become an Arcadian and maximize their impact in creating a more sustainable world.

Here's just one way Prime Employer for Women, Arcadis, gives back.

Helping students support their local community

Arcadis collaborated with the Ahead Partnership to challenge pupils at the Fortis Academy, a co-educational secondary school and sixth form located in the Great Barr area of Birmingham, England, to pitch their ideas about how they can help develop Perry Barr to support their community.

Year 9 pupils designed, created and innovated in the Perry Barr Challenge, with the Ahead Partnership stating: "Congratulations to the winning team!"

Forging skills-based volunteering and local education engagement

Arcadis says that: "Many young people don’t see construction as an attractive career proposition, and low awareness of job opportunities means we’re facing a huge industry skills gap." As such, Arcadis works with young people through skills-based volunteering and local education engagement to promote learning and career opportunities in STEM-related industries all around the UK.

The impact of working with schools helps to increase attainment, raise aspirations and improve inclusivity, with three quarters of participants saying they are more likely to consider STEM careers as a result.

"Whether we’re designing and building resilient and adaptable places for people to live and work, developing innovative ideas to tackle climate change, or envisaging our future transport infrastructure, there are innumerable opportunities to have a positive impact in shaping the future. And, for us, a vital first step in attracting new talent to the industry is helping to raise the profile of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) qualifications in schools and colleges around the country," explains Arcadis.

"We’ve found that working with schools in this way is an effective way to help increase attainment, raise aspirations and improve inclusivity. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with 97% reporting that they now had a better understanding of career options in the built environment, and nearly three quarters of participants saying they were now more likely to consider a career in STEM."

Building a successful and resilient society

The Ahead Partnership is a purpose-driven business that reinvests surpluses into its programmes. It believes that it takes the combined resources of business, public and community partners to build a successful and resilient society where everyone, regardless of their background, can flourish.

Founded and headquartered in Leeds, but operating nationally, its vision, mission and values define what it does and how it works. Its design-led approach is flexible, creative and dynamic to allow the development of experimental programmes and partnership solutions to address specific societal needs.

"We are proud of all our work to date which has focused on working with business to tackle disadvantage, strengthen communities, grow enterprise and develop skills," says Ahead Partnership.
