McKesson's Ammie McAsey takes pharma distribution to new level

For more than a decade, Ammie McAsey has championed excellence and driven results within U.S. Pharma’s distribution operations. She led the opening of U.S. Pharma’s Chicagoland distribution center in 2009, helped design the Clear Lake distribution center in 2013, and has been at the forefront of numerous strategic initiatives.

Now, senior vice president, U.S. Pharma Distribution Operations is leading the supply chain and distribution strategy for U.S. Pharmaceutical - and she couldn’t be more excited about her role.

“I can’t wait to see where we take our distribution operations in the next 10 years,” she says. “What are the ideas that work for our company, our customers and our employees? We have to work through those to remain at the top of the mountain.”

Creating engaging, productive, safe environments

One of her top priorities? “I want to ensure we create environments that are engaging, productive and safe for employees,” she says. “I also want to ensure we have technology and equipment in our distribution centers to meet compliance regulations and to adapt to evolving customer expectations.”

Ammie starts each morning with a customer focus. She checks to make sure disruptions didn’t occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. that could negatively impact our customers’ ability to serve patients.

From there, Ammie goes from conference calls to meetings, thinking about the larger strategy overall: What does the network look like? What kind of training and development will leaders receive? How is technology being discussed?

“In 10 years, we’ve moved the dial so significantly to drive efficiencies,” she says. “A huge piece of how we’ve been able to be successful is how we deploy technology.”

People dynamics are key

What really gets her excited to come to work, though, isn’t the state-of-the-art technology or streamlined processes; it’s the people.

“I love being able to make a difference in someone’s life,” says Ammie. “When I think about our distribution operations, it’s the ability to teach someone something different. A team member may have a simple question about why we do something. I like to elaborate and truly explain why we make the decisions we do so that an individual can better understand their part in the job of delivering products to customers.”

Leading with transparency is how Ammie operates. It’s also how she builds trust with her team.

“I find that when I can share and be as open as possible, I get a lot more back,” she says. “Whether they’re leading a team or picking an order, I want my team members to know why their job matters and how they’re contributing to our overall success.”

Leading (and Learning) from the Lone Star State

Ammie and Jim were married, saying “I do!” a number of years ago at Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo.

Ammie will soon hang her hat in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. She is relocating from Olive Branch, Mississippi, with her husband, Jim, and their English Bulldog, Samson. She’s excited about the move - and the nachos, which she got a taste of last month.

“I’m thrilled about moving to Texas! We look forward to having friends and family visit us,” she says. “And in my never-ending pursuit of finding the best nachos in the United States, I can’t wait to hear restaurant recommendations from the team in Las Colinas.”

While Ammie looks forward to discovering the best Tex-Mex and enjoying new adventures with Jim and Samson, she also looks forward to continuing to make an impact at McKesson.

“I love to see people learn,” says Ammie. “When we as leaders can learn from someone or share something we know, I think we’ve had a great day.”
