Women who are looking to work for a company that adds value to society and contributes to communities around the world via volunteering, philanthropy and expanding healthcare, need look no further than Medtronic.

This article takes a look at the Medtronic Mission and the company’s aims when it comes to helping society through innovative work.

What is Medtronic’s Mission?

In 1960, Medtronic Co-Founder Earl Bakken penned the Medtronic Mission and created a powerful vision for the company.

Over a half-century later, the mission continues to serve as Medtronic’s ethical framework and inspirational goal for employees around the world.

The Mission is:

  • to contribute to human welfare by application of biomedical engineering in the research, design, manufacture, and sale of instruments or appliances that alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life
  • to direct Medtronic’s growth in the areas of biomedical engineering where the company displays maximum strength and ability; to gather people and facilities that tend to augment these areas; to continuously build on these areas through education and knowledge assimilation; to avoid participation in areas where Medtronic cannot make unique and worthy contributions
  • to strive without reserve for the greatest possible reliability and quality in Medtronic's products; to be the unsurpassed standard of comparison and to be recognized as a company of dedication, honesty, integrity and service
  • to make a fair profit on current operations to meet Medtronic’s obligations, sustain company growth, and reach company goals
  • to recognize the personal worth of employees by providing an employment framework that allows personal satisfaction in work accomplished, security, advancement opportunity, and means to share in the company's success
  • to maintain good citizenship as a company

Omar Ishrak, Medtronic Chairman and CEO, says: “I truly believe bringing different perspectives to our work, as well as employing a workforce that represents our patients and customers, will create a stronger, better company.”
