Spirax-Sarco Engineering is proud of its excellent team of engineers. To mark International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), Spirax-Sarco Engineering celebrated the amazing achievements of its women engineers and created a resource for young people to inspire them to pursue STEM careers.
Understanding that diversity creates a stronger workforce

For Spirax-Sarco Engineering, INWED is an important day because the company understands that diversity is not solely about gender. Other factors such as age, culture, experience and expertise also help to build a stronger workforce.
Due to COVID-19, Spirax-Sarco Engineering company Watson-Marlow was unable to celebrate INWED in its new Aflex facility in Halifax, UK. However, employees found creative ways to passionately support and celebrate the day from the safety of their homes.
Inspiring young people to pursue engineer careers

One way they achieved this was putting together a free downloadable Activity Book for budding engineers so they can better understand what engineers do across the Spirax-Sarco Engineering plc - and hopefully inspire them to pursue STEM careers in the future.
The resource opened with information about what it means to be an engineer and defined an engineer as someone who "wants to know how and why things work."
There are also pages of fun activities including a colour-in image, wordsearch, word fit, code cracking, and a maze, all centred around educating and exciting young people about engineering.
The document also includes profiles about famous women engineers throughout history, from Stephanie Kwolek, the inventor of Kevlar, to Hedy Lamarr, who pioneered the first wireless technology.
Reflecting on the previous year's INWED celebrations
For INWED last year, Spirax-Sarco Engineering hosted a networking event, had four inspirational speakers and a lively panel discussion with questions and answers. Each of the speakers briefly spoke about their career, their current focus and then took questions from the room regarding how we can generate more interest in careers in STEM particularly for women.
