Medtronic Foundation expands its equity-based STEM partnerships

 July 15, 2022

The Medtronic Foundation launched 10 partnerships with leading equity-based STEM organizations serving students in Southern California, Colorado, and Ireland.

The partnerships aim to remove barriers in accessing quality Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education and they aim to create opportunity for economic advancement.

Improving lives of underrepresented students

Over two years, the Medtronic Foundation is investing $2.8 million to improve lives for over 30,000 underserved and underrepresented students across three new locations. Each partnership is kick-starting sustainable outcomes to address the root cause of persistent inequities where Medtronic employee volunteers have the greatest footprint and ability to make a difference.

"Our partnerships go far beyond funding. We bring Medtronic employee volunteers, nonprofits, and communities together, in doing this, we’re able to amplify our impact and create lasting change," says Liz Lund, Director of Strategic Operations, Medtronic Foundation.

Reducing barriers to achieving health and well-being

Underserved and underrepresented communities face deep and continual challenges with economic stability. Providing opportunities for equitable STEM education is one of the ways the Medtronic Foundation strives to reduce barriers to achieving health, well-being and prosperity.

‘We are delighted to embark upon this exciting partnership with the Medtronic Foundation. It will enable us to focus on disseminating interactive, equitable, and authentic science experiences to previously under-reached demographics,” adds Dr. Muriel Grenon, Director of Cell EXPLORERS, National University of Ireland Galway. “We at Cell EXPLORERS firmly believe that science is for everyone, and this partnership will help us to continue to address misconceptions about the types of people who can engage with science, whist strengthening partnerships with communities working with underserved young people both within the university and beyond.”

Expanding on existing STEM partnerships

Partnerships with equity-based youth programs are part of a bigger initiative with Medtronic Foundation to remove barriers to STEM education and to promote equity and representation with the goal of improving lives of underserved communities.

These STEM partnerships expand on 13 existing STEM partnerships across Minnesota, Northern California, and Puerto Rico.
