Dedication to fighting heart disease and stroke
For nearly 100 years, the American Heart Association has continued to fight heart disease and stroke, striving to save and improve lives. From humble beginnings, the American Heart Association has grown into the oldest and largest voluntary organization in the United States dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. A shared focus on cardiovascular health unites its more than 35 million volunteers and supporters.
Heart disease is the number one killer worldwide, and stroke ranks second globally. Even when those conditions don’t result in death, they cause disability and diminish quality of life. The American Heart Association wants to see a world free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The sheer size and scope of the American Heart Association ensures the organization makes a real impact. It has invested more than $five billion in research, making it the largest not-for-profit funding source for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease research next to the federal government.
The American Heart Association has defined best practices for employers to use to build a culture of health and well-being for their workforce. The American Heart Association’s Workforce Well-being Scorecard measures the extent to which the company has implemented those best practices. Companies recognized at the Gold level have achieved a score of 183 - 216 out of a maximum 230 points. Northrop Grumman received a Gold Recognition for Workplace Health Achievement.
The American Heart Association’s Workforce Well-being Scorecard is designed to help employers evaluate the culture of health and well-being within their workforces to identify gaps and determine how their progress stacks up to peer organizations. The Scorecard was developed in partnership with leading science and workforce well-being volunteers, and is grounded in the science of the American Heart Association. Employers have the option to submit employee health data in order to achieve Platinum Recognition, and the American Heart Association offers a free online health assessment tool for gathering the data, if needed. The new-and-improved Scorecard was enhanced to include evaluation of mental health policies, organizational well-being strategies to address employee burnout, strategies to promote health equity in the workforce, employer support of financial health, a key element of well-being and the impact of volunteerism and community partnerships.
Studies have shown that workforce health and well-being programs that are well-designed, fully implemented, and rigorously evaluated can lead to better employee health, productivity, and retention. Northrop Grumman, named by the American Heart Association, is recognized for its implementation of quality workforce health and well-being programs and culture of health best practices.
