Vodafone named as one of the best companies to work for

For the second year in a row, Vodafone has been named by the Sunday Times as one of the UK’s 25 Best Big Companies to Work For. Vodafone’s place in the rankings has jumped to number seven, making it one of the 10 best big companies to work for in the UK and the only telecoms company in the top 10.

Vodafone gives something back

As well as this prestigious recognition, Vodafone also won two special awards, “Most Improved” and “Giving Something Back”.

Vodafone's “Giving Something Back” award was for DreamLab, a free crowdsourcing app that can help progress important cancer research. The app is a collaboration between the Vodafone Foundation and researchers at Imperial College London and takes the processing power of mobiles while they are charging overnight to crunch data quicker than desktop computers. Vodafone are also working with Rolls-Royce plc and The British Council to launch an initiative that uses DreamLab while staff are in a meeting.

High employee satisfaction

The awards show that Vodafone has a high workplace engagement because its employees feel valued and supported. Vodafone employees know they can make a valuable contribution, cited by 83% of those surveyed, which put Vodafone in second place for this aspect in the Sunday Times list.

Vodafone has been working hard to create a culture where everyone feels included and inspired to be at their best, and it is always looking to improve - particularly in three key areas: building a digital talent base, investing in future digital talent, and creating a diverse and inclusive workplace.

Building its digital talent base

Vodafone wants to prepare its employees for a digital workplace. New innovations like 5G, the Internet of Things and cloud services will transform the workplace, and it’s important for Vodafone to ensure everyone grows their digital skills. Vodafone University is an online platform that delivers all its training in one place so that employees can gain access to learning modules on important topics like digital marketing and digital selling whenever they want to.

Vodafone's Code Ready is a free digital skills initiative that supports employees in Vodafone retail stores and contact centres who are interested in a digital career. Once they have completed the course, these employees have all the skills they need to gain a new digital job at Vodafone.

Investing in future digital talent

Vodafone is also investing in future digital talent through the Vodafone Digital Degree that combines a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science with a technology apprenticeship at Vodafone. These apprentices receive a salary for all four years of their degree programme, with a confirmed role in Vodafone’s digital teams once they graduate.

Vodafone also partners with social enterprises to provide educational opportunities for young people. Vodafone's Code Like A Girl is a free coding workshop that equips girls aged 14-18 with foundational digital skills, such as coding a website.

A diverse and inclusive workplace

Vodafone aims to be the world’s best employer for women by 2025. Vodafone's ReConnect helps women and men transition back to work after a career break to increase the proportion of female managers and leaders. Vodafone also has an impressive maternity policy where women receive up to 16 weeks of fully paid maternity leave across the company.

Vodafone also wants its LGBT+ employees to feel included and heard in the workplace. Vodafone is one of Stonewall's UK Top 100 Employers for the second year running, and its LGBT+ Friends Network was Highly Commended.

"I am proud of our community and the workplace culture we’ve built at Vodafone. I believe that we are at our best when our employees are empowered to be at their best," says Adam Parsons, Human Resources Director at Vodafone UK.

"It is thanks to the drive, hard work and motivation of our people that we are now among the top 10 best big companies in The Sunday Times’s 25 Best Big Companies to Work For in the UK, and recognised for giving back as well."
