A plan to end hunger in local communities

84.51°'s parent company, The Kroger Company, established the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste plan to end hunger in its communities and get rid of food waste in the company by 2025.

The plan includes a $10 million innovation fund, an increase in food donations, an advocacy program for public policy solutions to address community hunger and divert food waste from landfills, as well as other great efforts. 84.51° is inspired by Kroger’s approach to both sustain our planet and help local communities.

84.51° was also a finalist in the Alt+Data Category of World Changing Ideas for its data science behind Kroger's Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative. World Changing Ideas celebrates companies like 84.51° who are helping society become more sustainable.

Inspired to go green in the workplace

Motivated by Kroger's efforts, 84.51° is also striving to go green. With the help of its Green Team, 84.51° has introduced some exciting changes to its workplace culture.

The company has reprogrammed its light-occupancy sensors to a shorter amount of time, avoiding lights accidentally being left on. 84.51° is using 100 per cent renewable sources for electricity throughout the building and has installed low-flow water fixtures that minimise water consumption.

84.51° offers more vegan and vegetarian options in its office café and has asked vendors to only use paper products when catering at events or meetings. The company has also launched a composting pilot program in collaboration with GoZERO, a Cincinnati-based effort to divert food waste from landfilling. In addition, 84.51° has switched from plastic to wood coffee stirrers for their compostable properties. 84.51° also made sure employees were educated about what is and is not recyclable and compostable.

Green Team textile collection drive

After learning the average American throws away 68 pounds of clothing every year, 84.51°'s Green Team hosted a textile collection drive to support the City of Cincinnati’s Curbside Textile Recycling Program.

According to 84.51°, 10.5 per cent of what Cincinnati residents put in landfills are textiles, which equals 6,564 tons of textile material each year. The textile drive gave the opportunity for 84.51°'s team to donate any damaged or unwanted clothing, accessories and housewares to be given a brand new life from Rumpke.

Eco-friendly sponsorships and collaborations

Because of 84.51°'s passion for sustainability and green living, the company seized the chance to sponsor the Greater Cincinnati Earth Day Festival in Blue Ash, Ohio. 84.51° especially loved the theme of the festival, Don’t Waste Food, which was completely in line with its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste commitments.

“There’s an enormous amount of food waste in general and putting it into landfills just creates unnecessary greenhouse gases,” said Rich Hall, Vice President of Digital & Wellness at 84.51˚. “We think there is a great opportunity to address that.”

84.51˚ was also thrilled to partner with The Greater Cincinnati Earth Coalition to educate its community about reducing food waste and promoting an overall eco-friendly way of life.
